At the end of the day...

The truth is as simple as a cliche. And this weekend skiing in Tahoe I learned the end of the day is what it's all about. Because a dreadful snow-less season is forgotten with one really, really good snow day topped off with an apres Margarita. (Not that all my best memories involve alcohol, but kind of...)

Snow shorts, Squaw

Margarita o'clock, me at Squaw
At this point you might be wanting to remind me at the end of the day is an expression, not a cliche.

Agreed. Friends, you are talking to a malapropism-spoonerism-eggcorn-loathing madwoman. One who is rendered catatonic by the lyrics of Alanis Morissette's song "Ironic" on the three-hour car ride up to Tahoe.  Alanis! I am heard to say: "rain on your wedding day" is not ironic, it's just bad luck! Oh you silly sausage, I sense you thinking, why don't you just switch the radio channel when she comes on?
*At the end of the day, no I couldn't do that, I love winding myself up.

We arrived at our rental cabin to find the heating broken again. Spent another night shivering in our beds.
*At the end of the day, said my husband Kevin, cold burns energy. Think how much weight we lost!

Kevin and I worried about how privileged our kids are and lectured them on how they will have to pay for their own skiing one day. "Don't worry, I'm going to be a point guard in the NBA, I can pay."said Cy, eight.  "Don't worry" said Harley, 14, our ever-insouciant boy "I have awesomely smart friends who'll make loads of money, they'll take care of me."
*At the end of the day, when did we lose that invincible belief in ourselves - and our friends?

Jackson, 12, and friends Cole, Mia and Will

I was anxious too about having paid for a rental cabin and season ski passes when we may only see one week's decent skiing.
*At the end of the day, it's a Sunk Cost said Kevin. (Sometimes it's comforting to be married to an economist...)

End of the day at Alpine.... Kevin, Tallulah and Jackson
Better sign off now...I'm starting to sound madder than a flabby meataxe.
*At the end of the day...isn't it ironic?

  2. Oh the irony---- or tremendous bad luck----- as long as you enjoy this time together!

Speaking of English fallacies, I ** HATE ** when people say "I could care less" when they actually mean that they "couldn't care less" ----- slightly off topic but it popped into my mind!

  4. Listen, you survived to tell the tale. No irony in that (I think).

  5. I think I may have to borrow the expression 'sunk cost'. Does it apply to spur of the moment purchases of shoes? Probably not.

    1. It can apply to all sorts of purchases that can't be taken back. Marginal utility is another goody that I use to justify purchases...

  7. We just love spring skiing and would have this coming week but we feared the lack of fluffy white stuff. Love the pic of the kid in trunks...that is so springtime on the slopes. I agree about one glorious day of powder and it can make your week or month. I also agree with the importance of après cocktails after a long day on the slopes. While I'm at it, I will agree a third time with your choice of cocktail. It's always that or a ice-cold beer.

  10. I love when you go rouge wordsmith on us! I had to look up two today. No irony in that.

And I love the thought of losing weight by shivering. I'll do pretty much anything but stop eating. A touch of irony there, no?!

We leave for Colorado next week. I'm hoping for a huge snowstorm between now and then. But not once I'm there. Yes, I do prefer the follow the storm not ski in it!

  13. That expression drives my husband bonkers - the UK Wife Swap show seemed to feature people who said it at least a dozen times per episode!

  14. "At the end of the day, said my husband Kevin, cold burns energy. Think how much weight we lost!"

What a great spin! Sounds like a lovely time, with or without heat. xo style, she wrote

  16. Cold burns energy we should be very slim in Ireland sadly we make up for cold by eating loads. I love this saying .

  17. How sad to have no snow in the mountains:( I had to laugh at your take on Ironic. I feel exactly the same way...not a stitch of irony in that entire song:)

  18. Um, what is a sunk coast? And why do I have the feeling I have lots of them and they are not good. I love Cy and Harley's answers--I had dinner with my oldest friend Serge last night (you have to meet him, he lives in no cal) and we have known each other since we were 15! I am not even half as confident now as I was then, reality (and sunk coasts) seem to make it disappear! Hope you had a fun time up there!

  19. LOL! The award for the post that made me laugh loudest today goes to you, Jody! This was really funny. 'At the end of the day' wasn't an expression I had heard until I moved to the UK.

My favourite line from this: 'Sometimes it's comforting to be married to an economist...' ;)

  20. totally agree with the favorite line part (from the above comment) :).

  23. You are such a cool mother.....do your kids get that?

  24. Yes - as that Irish comedian chap (who's name has escaped me) said - the song really should be called 'Unfortunate'. And apparently it IS supposed to be lucky to rain on your wedding day - that's what I was told anyway (as it did on mine!) Another song that turns me into a grammar freak (which I'm so NOT, honest guv) is Spandau Ballet's 'Instinction'. Never been any such word in any dictionary ever but hey.... Strange this makes me sniff as in real life I delight in bad grammar and making up my own words. I think it's 'cos they obv didn't know they were being thick, whereas I enjoy it. Ah well, at the end of the day, does it all matter as long as you know how to calmly turn the dial?.....
