Art Directing Your Life!

Have you noticed really annoying people clogging the streets re-taking photos? That's right - annoying people like me and my kids. Not only feeding social media sites, as if anyone gives a stuff, but managing the images?  "We're all art directing our lives now" said a friend of mine.

Just painted this old Ikea chair, pretending I sit here, but never do...

My kids, more masterful than I'll ever be -  my eldest son got 46 comments on his first Instagram pic - are already familiar with the grainy realism of the meal-eaten shot, the ennui-slouching-against-a-brick-wall shot, the everyones'-shoes-in-a-circle shot, the spread-fingers-in-a-sunset-sky shot, the rear-vision mirror shot. I know many people - no names - who photoshop out their wrinkles before posting on Facebook.

Over the weekend we had our school fund-raising auction, themed Hollywood. I ran out of time to organise a costume so just wore New Blue (second wear, getting my money's worth) and sorry, had not intended to bore you more photos of that dress. I had my hair dyed Ombre or "Dye Dip"- dark underneath and in the back - with a triple Pompadour 'do afterwards.

First off I had three big boomphy rolls on the top of my head and braids at the side, a sort of Bourbon (Louis XV) Mohawk. But I chickened out, leaving just a small roll in front. I still felt exposed and I suppose put on too much make-up. One of my kids, taking photos said: "You look scary with all that make-up. Turn to the side when I count three." (Btw, I liked the Ombre but I've had nuff naysayers that it's going back to block-blonde tomorrow...Coward.)

Turning the scary face on three
Taking piccies of the best costumes of the night I started art directing Brangelina (who knew what to do) and others who must have thought I was totally bonkers. "Laughing now! Yes, Hah ha! Love it... Love it!"

Brangelina

Sunday we hosted a party for all the families in Tallulah's 6th Grade. She started a new school last year and meeting loads new parents again, I've realised I swear. A lot. So there was a lot of muffled f-bombs. But I refuse to do away with my "bugger" which FYI is perfectly acceptable in New Zealand and even used in TV advertising there.

A friend of mine pleaded the other day: "I don't ever want to read the name of Obama on your blog." She's as a keen supporter of Ob as me, but what she meant was my blog is for the silly, don't clog it with health reform issues and similar.

Nonetheless, after seeing the Vanity Fair photo of Obama clutching his mouthguard for a game of basketball, my boys are re-considering wearing theirs' which are shiny-new as the day purchased a year ago. So there you go, Obama is already saving us money.

Anyway, after a week of balmy temps here hitting the 70s, Obama won, and sun kept on shining. I celebrated last night with six pieces of toast, butter and Frog Hollow marmalade. Yeah, crazy, that's me. So crazy, I forgot to take a photo. Bugger.

  2. LOL about the hair...I think you look great...nix that, I think you look amazing!! Kids are so tech friendly these days, I have another facebook account that I keep just for the family and some of my stepdaughters friends are friends with us on there. LOL...I guess we're the cool parents! But they have iphones and instagram and are up till 1 am...I'm thinking the whole time, shouldn't you be in bed, don't you have school tomorrow!! Wouldn't you love to see them go a week without the phones and computers!! Then again I would love to do that myself...ooo and the TV!

Love the photos from the party...I need a good Halloween party to go do!!

I swear too much sometimes, but I did cut it down a bit! :)

  4. I think you look great and I don't see anything scary there. :) I would also leave the ombré alone. It looks great too!

  5. I love it that bugger is acceptable - I seem to use it quite a lot!!

  6. Bugger was perfectly acceptable in our house - in the north of England it's very common: a good roll-off-the-tongue swear word.

I see someone nicked my Audrey Hepburn costume? Bugger.

  9. I think you look stunning! As for swearing ... come to Ireland, where it's perfectly acceptable to say 'feck' .. it's all in the placement of vowels you know :)

    1. Feck: Sounds so much sweeter with an Irish accent. Not sure it will sound as lyrical in my strong Kiwi whine.

  11. Love your hair. You're always on the cutting edge with these things. I just thought a lot of people had roots. Duh! Now I get it.

I do like the fun in your blog, but am happy about the election!

  12. So very spot on, as usual. I love the ombre, by the way!

I've tried, unsuccessfully recently, to keep politics off my blog. I just have so much to say and most of my friends are tired of hearing it!!! Thank goodness for four more years!!!!!

  13. I go to as many parties in one year as you seem to go to in one week. Do you ever get fed up of them?

  15. I wondered about you directing Brangelina until I saw the last picture of that couple swinging loads of kids ; hilarious ! By the way, thanks for your nice comment on today's post on my blog especially since the first photo featured ... my lunch !

  16. Bugger is tame but I try to say boooooger instead but the meaning is the same. I totally agree with the art directed photos - you start digging out all sorts of gumph to photograph which you never dream of using normally. Like why am I using a backdrop of some nice candlesticks which I have not used in 10 years? Oh tell a lie - we had a blackout last year! But I hear what you're saying.

Your Hollywood party looks amazing - the trouble people went to! The Celine Dion is a winner!

  19. You are looking glam with your blue dress and fierce updo!
And I know what you mean about "staging your lives." My 6yo nephew is already a pro with his (dad's) iPad and goes around taking pics of himself and contorting things until they "just so." Shoot, I'm just lucky to get myself in frame most times, hehe.

  20. So funny - I curse and drink a lot more than my Atlanta neighbors - or so they lead me to believe. Can't teach an old dog new tricks though:)

  21. You look gorgeous in your blue please keep writing about whatever comes into your head be it mouth guards , Obama, wine or anything because when i read your posts I always have a chuckle a smile on my face

  22. I appreciate the lack of politics, why alienate 50% of potential readers?

  23. Jody- You go to the best school parties! And such famous guests!

But, in the "art directing" sense, it is strange to see our kids growing up in such a self-aware world. We adults like to think we know how to handle it, but maybe then, we don't either!

  24. I swear your parties are the best. All we ever do is hang out in a pub. Most of the attendees never even bothered to get dressed up. As for your son! 46 comments for his first Instagram pic. Kids these days are born with technology in their genes.

  25. Ha! my sister (an American) living in NZ for 25 years now can't stop saying bugger. I think because it doesn't sound like a 'real' swear word, she uses it quite liberally! Especially when she's home and no one realizes she's swearing like sailor. As for art directing ... man isn't that the truth. Will have to remember that as I'm clicking away with my iphone so I've got the pics when I go to blog about it later :O

  26. Your blog always makes me smile...thank you for that, and for f--k's sake don't worry about bugger! (see I said it but didn't type it...I'm trying to get better!)and I liked the new hair.

  27. Yes I agree with your friend - a politics free zone is a haven.
Thanks for educating me re Dye Dip. It takes me a while to get used to it as a fashion because when I was a gel it meant you were "common as muck". (My mum would roll in her grave if she heard me use that expression.)
Yours looks quite tasteful - as I would expect:)
    Bugger's fine with me.
