I keep hearing about how high school kids are staying up to 12 midnight to finish their homework. Not happening at our house. Now that tennis is finished Harley,15, is home by 3.30pm to take up his position on the couch yelling at the Sports Channel. Yesterday at 8pm he transferred to his computer, ear buds in, to watch a movie.
"Don't you have any homework?" I asked.
"Mom, I told you, no more homework, it's the year end."
"So it's all over?"
"Well... we have finals."
"What about studying for those?" I know, that was impertinent of me. Quite rightly met with a hurt look. Ear buds back in.
Cy, nine, deals with his homework as soon as he gets home. By putting it in the re-cycling.

If you had your druthers, what would you do all day long?
I have no idea where all these "A' type people get their energy. They must have special drugs that they are not sharing. Kudos to Cy! I am ready to let Matthew do the same thing.

DeleteI'm pretty lazy too. If I had my way I'd come to a magically spotless house after enjoying a lavish lunch with friends. Unfortunately my life demands I get some work done, take care of another load of laundry and plan my grocery shopping and make a list for Target.

DeleteI'm very lazy too. Pinterest & blogs serve me well on the weekends, and the Mad Men episode deconstruction recaps every Monday. (Watching all the special features & audio commentaries on the Mad Men DVDs are great too).

Oh...if I had my choice! Unfortunately it's NEVER going to happen as I still have a TWO year old, sucker for punishment (amongst other things) that I am. I may be in France yet am still housewifeing it up...just in a different place, a place where it's much harder on my poor addled brain to communicate and to remember that the shops are only open sporadically. Already the chaps at the alimentation are helping to find me fruit/veg cheese that's perfect for the next meal...I need all the help I can get. I miss Jilly Cooper...wish she'd write something else with Rupert Campbell - Black in it! Rx
ReplyDeleteOh Gosh Romy, now I'm going to have to re-re-read the Jilly C classics. My friends and I used to be obsessed by her. Sadly I never got to meet her when I worked in Gloucestershire.
DeleteOooh, I did! I met Jilly C at a book launch followed by supper for 10 in Dublin a few years ago. (I was 'escorting' an elderly neighbour who is a friend of hers) She is divine! Tiny, gorgeous, charming and hilarious! At the time I hadn't read any of her books (mortifying, I know) as I thought they were just silly bonkbusters. Well, how wrong was I? I then had the great joy of reading ALL of her books one after the other. Ah, Jilly Cooper! Love her :) (PS she's supposed to be writing another Rupert Campbell Black book at the mo. Yay!)

DeleteJody, I did much the same on Mother's Day. Best ever! I must be of a similar ilk as you and spent hours upon hours in my room reading novels on my bed as a girl. That is why I have a hard time pushing my kids to be so busy like the rest..
ReplyDeleteFunny, my oldest Jackson is also on tennis and is done now for the year and off at 1:55! So many hours for TV, computer and rarely has homework! He's a homebody though and I do like that..I have to say though, living in this area, I feel a bit of anxiety about his free time..
I'm hoping like you said, the C students will be the stars one day. I already heard that they make the best managers and the A students aren't able to problem solve like the slacker kids who actually had time to daydream and think outside the box..
Hoping so and he won't just be flippin' burgers...

DeleteLove your attitude. yes it's hard not to take on the parenting pressure to always have them doing stuff. Even if he's flippin burgers Im sure it will be at his own burger chain. Apparently people cannot get enough burgers in CA.
DeleteJody, you always look absolutely stunning in all your outfit shots. You should do it more. I used to have a weekly Lazy Cook feature on my blog. My eyes roll to the back of my head whenever I see any recipes that require lots of washing up, chopping, complicated maneuvers etc etc. And I refuse to get up on Saturdays. The hubby knows not to expect me to chat/wash up/smile/walk until I have a few cups of coffee and a laze about.

DeleteLOL. I'm lazy too. When it comes to schoolwork, though, I'd rather get it done right away... unless there's a book to read. Reading is always educational, right? Anyways, the one thing I'm especially lazy about is: making beds. Beds aren't made in our house. At least, not by me and the boy. My husband and his parents love to make beds, and they were always made when the in-laws visited. My viewpoint is this: What's the point? It's going to get messed up anyway each night! And the hubs... don't even get me started. He'll make the bed even right before bedtime! Ridiculous! :)

DeleteI'd spend my time in my pj's, tucked up in bed, with a really good book and endless cups of Earl Grey and posh biscuits (or Rich Tea will do). ALL day. It's been over ten years since that last happened and I fear that I may never get that luxury again. And as for lazy, I missed a whole week of lectures once, holed up in my student digs, with a batch of Agatha Christies, tea and bics. Old habits die hard.

ReplyDeleteYour Sunday sounds fab to me. I did read one of those joke ecards today that said "You know that feeling of being able to sit down when you're exhausted? Yeah, me neither, I'm not a Dad". Sadly it rang true....
It's always seemed to me that being "Type A" is some sort of trophy thing with Americans. Seemingly the ability to be go-go-go/ perfectionistic / obsessional and never to sit still is to be prized. One of my friends once said she was an "Active Relaxer", meaning she liked to do things to relax, like clean her house... I replied that I was a "relaxing relaxer" meaning I preferably like to lie around and read a book uninterrupted. x

After my firm "merged" (was cherry-picked) by The International Behemoth Chtd., I sat and stared and stared at the offer from Behemoth - well, there were a couple, Behemoth has branches - and realized I was never going to get the offer of my dreams: Stay home and we'll send you money and black cars (NY-speak for limos). That's the offer I'm waiting for. Still.

Reading has always been my first passion and although I don't have as much time as I wish for reading anymore, that used to be my favourite activity on summer holidays and every spare moment I had while I was in school, from elementary school to university. I adore your look, Jody! White and emerald green is one of my favourite colour combinations.

ReplyDeleteGoodness, I'd love to lay in bed all day and watch movies and eat food :)) I wish it could happen :)) The mothers at my daughters school have their children in all these activities and are really precise with everything, I'm the opposite, haha. They come to the school looking stressed and I just glide in. My daughter has drama and that's it, that's all she wants to do, so I don't push. We get homework done and don't stress about it. She's super smart. The first thing she does when she comes home is get her pajamas back on and get a snack and then play. Sometimes she does her homework after school, but she does her homework mostly after dinner. It's better to be more relaxed, then she doesn't get so stressed to get her homework done and not understand what she even did. xx

ReplyDeleteMy eldest has got part 1 of his Bac coming up. If it were me, I'd be revising the stuff I'm not so good at, his dad even bought him a book. Him? Mr Cool. He should be home working now but he's probably out with the chicks. He'll drift in later, eat me out of house and home and the retire upstairs to watch a movie. If he gets his Bac it'll be a bloody miracle!
I think you've been looking through my window!! We had the homework conversation again tonight, apparently there's been none for the past couple of weeks but now we find out it should have been revision 'cos the exams start Monday.....but there has been cricket on the tv (when they're not playing cricket that is!)
ReplyDeleteLying in bed, reading and watching movies... Is that a fact? Well, I get to do that almost every single Monday, believe it or not, because.... I never work on Mondays. It's wonderful and I'd recommend everyone who can afford it to do the same. It's that feeling of...everyone's off to work and I can just kick back and relax.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a high school kid, I didn't realize those were the best days of my care-free life. Now, I've got to wait until somebody invents that time machine I so need to order from amazon.
First off I'd google druthers to see what I had and make sure it was my last day on earth.

As a family, despite our jaunts to far-flung places, we love chilling on the sofa watching TV in the evening. We haven't had many where we are all in together but tonight's the night. It's only 6pm here but my feet are up already.
