Everybody's Wearing Green!

Chelsea Handler says she now realises why her stylist is dressing her like an elf all the time. Green is the new hue. I've come late to this particular party coach (which is now leaving town and heading for the hills) but I'm determined not to be left out.

OK you fashion bloggers out there - how in the heck do you take a picture in the mirror with an i-phone? I kept pulling back and my neck looked like Jabba The Hutt

See background. Teddy the pup came back from the groomer wearing a green scarf. The kids took it off saying it was not "manly" enough for him.

This is an outfit from Banana Republic, a place I never shop except to buy long white shorts, because it always seems kind of workish-y and I don't have a job. (I'd like to get one but there is the little matter of my needing a nap at 1pm and I imagine most employers don't see that as a plus.)

Anyway I really liked the advertisement in Oprah magazine. Yes, how dorky is that, I copied an advertisement. It's the ultimate matchy matchy, but feck it - it's easy to wear. Maybe a long gold necklace would mix it up a bit?...let me know if you see one.

I've been looking for a pant for a year (in the US everything is singular: a pant, a trouser, a smoky eye).  None of the J. Crew ones look any good on me and other brands look like Nana pants or (TMI alert) show my cellulite.

Not to Wikipedia you on a Friday but in the Middle Ages green was worn by merchants (as opposed to red for nobility and grey and brown for peasants) and during the Renaissance painters learned to paint faces with first green then pink which made the skin look more realistic.

A stylist once told me I didn't suit emerald (or black) but this is more bottle green. Gaghh! Bottle Green???? I've shuddered at Bottle Green since my High School years when it was the colour of our school uniform. The bottle green wool pleated shift would be worn in winter and bottle green skirt for the summer.

Our High School's motto was "Incipe!" (Begin!) but our unofficial chant was: "We are the boys and girls from....High! Where the girls are easy and the boys are sleazy!" Lovely.

Maybe with this outfit I've finally made peace with bottle green and my High School years. (Mean girl JB -  if you're reading this, it doesn't let you off the hook.)

Kim of NorCalStyle has the most gorgeous post on green so I exhort you (see what wearing green does to you?) to head on over.

What green beckons in your weekend?

  2. ....And jealously and envy - and hope - pretty much covers all the emotions.

  3. I back your kids. Don't make your dog wear non-manly accessories. My cat agrees, as one who removed every collar ever put on him as an affront to his image.

No beckons me this weekend. I only have a rather nice smoky green cashmere pullover but won't be wearing it because I'm not going anywhere, being boy and man-free. I'm going to be slobbin'!

  4. NO freaking idea how they do it (phone pics). my hand always looks HUGE and aside from that, i can rarely use my bedroom mirror- in fear of showing 'what lies beneath' (or behind, rather)... unmade bed, clothes everywhere, since we (ryan) can't seem to make use of our hamper......

i LOVE the color green. this does not look "bottle"?! (who knew there was such a color??) lOVE the way it looks on you. LOVE that you copied the ad. i say, it's a color of POWER.

    1. Tory yes! I had to do a MAJOR clean up before I could take these photos. In fact when I headed upstairs it was bright sunlight and by the time I took the pics it was 5.30 and getting dark. However I did think of going that new way of photography where one leave the mess.

  5. I have tried and failed miserably to take iphone pics in the mirror. Doesn't work for me. Sue at Susie So So is the champion of the art. The green looks fab on you ... it's not a colour I ever wear. Reminds me of my school uniform, but even worse, there's the whole leprechaun and shamrock connotations where I live!!

    1. So true...and jolly green giant and shrek! They all come to mind.
How funny that you had a bottle green school uniform too.

  6. I can't wear green near my face unless I want to look like I'm about to use a barf bag. No green this weekend for me except a lot of veggies.

You, however, wear green really well. I'm not BS-ing you but you look better than that ad.

  7. TR: you can't do green - not even a blue green? You are too nice - the model looks so languorous - is that a word? All the time in the world and there's a cool breeze blowing her way...

  8. I LOVE how you've bought the whole actual outfit from the ad! Genius...and do you know what, it looks way nicer on you than on that model. You need to tell Banana Republic this. And kudos on the mirror photo. It's a skill...a bit like reversing the car...so you need a certain spatial skill that I am lacking. But it does get easier. Enjoy your weekend and your new outfit. Just don't wear on the 17th March or everyone will think you're Irish! Avxx

    1. Hi Avril, My Grandpa was from Ireland and I worked at Kitty O'Sheas (in Dublin, picking up glasses) for five months so I feel very Irish. And I don't want to be pinched (which is what they do to you here in the US if you don't wear green on the day!)

  9. As to iPhone mirror pictures, I'm betting there an app for that.
This weekend ismy mother's 90th birthday party, and since she collects Frogs, there will be lots of green.

  10. I might have to disagree with Helen a little about being master of the art. The pictures I take which include my head are rubbish because of the angle which makes me look like I have balloon head so I crop off my head in the pictures so not to scare anyone reading. Also, when I try to take a full length picture, it always look like I'm squinting/bog eyed which probably has a lot to do with failing eyesight as I try to focus. Again, crop off my head. Problem solved but I'm not recommending you do that Jody - you look fine - no big heads on your photos.

I love the green outfit - it's a fantastic shade against your blonde hair. And the sandals = big love. I want them despite not being able to walk in them.

  11. If you are set to copy the advert, I think you should go with a silver necklace. LOL

    You look great.

  12. I love this green on you! And don't worry-- the trend isn't going anywhere: Emerald is Pantone's color of the year :)

    1. Ha! I didn't know much about Pantone - just googled them. Kind of glad it's emerald and not chartreuse which is all over the outside and inside of our house, but then I lot of people really dislike chartreuse.

  13. Jody, First of all thanks a ton for the link to my green post! You are a doll to remember it...It's been a bit since I did it.

I am crazy for this whole outfit..You got the shoes also? Love it all! Wish I could look as chic as you do in this. I think you should get a day job as a model Seriously!! (Don't they let them nap?)

Im hitting up the BR in our town tomorrow to check this out. However, I fear I'll be looking like a short leprechaun and not at all like you!

    Have a good weekend
    xx

  15. I LOVE green and I think this outfit (copied from an ad or not) is gorgeous on you. I visited a cashmere factory shop in Howick in Scotland a couple of years ago and found two lovely green jumpers--one was an olive green and the other almost teal green (but not quite that blue) and feeling not very sure about them I tried them on (green, being new to my wardrobe). They were much nicer than I expected and since them I am looking for green everywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow Jody you look so slim, I think you can def wear green. If it's been in fashion I've certainly missed that particular trend (and all the others come to think of it!)
I like that you can only get a job that works with your nap time, we're so alike! I was reminded the other night by an old work colleague that I said (not too long ago) that I only drop into work if the ironing pile isn't too big! That still works as a good reason to stay home as far as I'm concerned!

    1. Jay - and that's why I haven't relented to the "crisp white shirt" call. Drip and dry baby. No ironing going on it my life, though my husband quite likes it.

  17. I'm not a great fan of green, though I dress up as an elf every now and then with some of my blogging friends. I mean, beautiful green is never ugly.

  18. This outfit is gorgeous on you. I think green with blonde hair is excellent.
Banana Republic has some nice things lately and I agree the fit of their pants is much better than J.Crew.
Okay off to see Kim's post!

    1. Dani- what do you think it is about the J.Crew fit? I love their colours and whole sensibility and I get really excited when I walk into their store but they just never look too right. Wonder if anyone else feels the same?

  19. You look great in your new green. I veer towards the teal/turquoise end of the spectrum myself. Of course my favorite shade of green is money, LOL!

  20. Jody I think you're the only person I know that could pull of that Banana Republic ad and actually look like the model! I never find pants that fit me (although back in the day BR pants did)--do you like the way yours fit? You look great in them!

  21. I think the entire outfit is gorgeous on you! Banana Republic has really started offering a lot of lovely things over the past year, and they always run good sales which is always a plus! :)

  22. Love your outfit! And I love green. Now that I am a red-head again, it's one of my go-to colours. Yay with the pants! I agree, it is so hard finding pants that fit properly.

I really want to check out Banana Republic's new Mad Men line.

  26. Rarely wear green, but never knew all the facts, so thans for that at your scene

  27. Love this whole look - it's funny as I keep looking at that ad - and BR rarely catches my eye these days for the same reasons as you. I was in one of their stores in the UK and it felt so much more upscale than the ones here - probably because the brand is newer but I swear I walked in and wanted it all which never happens here! Maybe I need to revisit BR. I recently revisited Ann Taylor and that was quite a revelation. Emerald is the pantone of 2013 - so wear it - and of course it'll be perfect for St. Paddys day this month - you won't get pinched!

  28. I also love the green trend! You look beautiful! Love the outfit. I laughed out loud at your comment about having to take a nap at 1! Sounds just like something I would say, too. :) I also love green in home decor. A little green accessory thrown into the mix looks fresh and new!

  30. My 'going away outfit' after my wedding was an emerald green suit. A friend said green was unlucky for a wedding. Maybe she was right, I've been stuck with him now for 23 years ;-)

I also wore a bottle green uniform for school which changed to a boring grey near the end of my time there. Always thought that was a shame as I liked green. The green I wear now tends to be lime.

  35. I don't own one green thing and I have no idea why, (I mean, I do like green). So I cannot be on the green team, sigh! And I'd avoid it this time of year even if I did have something green...can't abide dressing up for pretend holidays - read here 'St. Patrick's Day. And it's St. Paddy people, NOT St. Patty!!!! Patty is a girl's name. Sorry, mini tantrum.
Let me know when you get to blue on the spectrum...

  36. Vinogirl - good to know about the Paddy thing. Patty is my mother in law and I definitely think she should have a Saints Day to herself too. (Though that might be confusing).
