Grateful

How many ways can we give thanks today, friends? C'mon,  let's do it, let's count them.

Just doing the Ye Olde Cabi dress and Ye Really Olde $30 Payless boots, as per Pilgrims

1. Thanks that I live in Oakland, a town of true individuals, where Birds of Paradise bloom on 28th of November.

Our front porch today

2. Thanks for that rainy day in London 18 years ago when I put my two black rubbish bags of clothes behind a friend's couch and said: "I'll just be here a couple of nights until I find a new flat." Reader, I never moved out.

World's best flatmate brines the old bird.

3. Thanks that friends David and Sean were finally able to marry after 25 years together.

David and Sean's wedding cake. Wee figures look exactly like them

4. Thanks for kids who are who they are. Cy, nine, likes nothing more than to slip on a bow tie. But he also insists on cycling to tennis along a dangerous main road: "I love to feel the air in my face and think about my dreams" he told me today.

5. Thanks for friends Kenny'n'Mike who never fail to amuse the bouche.

6. And finally I give thanks to you, all of you, for reading and for commenting. There is no doubt in my mind that your comments are the best thing about this blog. How many times have I heard from people: "Oh I always read the comments first, they crack me up." You guys are Tawesome.

Now your turn - what are you giving thanks for today?

  1. that is a lovely front door...

I am thankful for my child who made at late appearance just before I turned 40 and his father turned 50 when I'd given up the idea of becoming a parent. And of course my family who love me no matter what. I also like electricity, a roof over my head, my ability to earn a living and people who make me laugh.

I cannot stand whinging and I think more people should be thankful on a daily basis because let's face it, if these things were taken from us, we'd do anything to get them back...

    1. I had Cy at 42 so know what you mean. " let's face it, if these things were taken from us, we'd do anything to get them back..." Good way of putting it, says it all.

  2. Lovely post Jody.....Happy Thanksgiving. We just 'face-timed' our family in Seattle and Oakdale..the sun was shining on them (it's foggy and cold here) and we are packing jumpers to go to Poland tomorrow and yet again I realised that I am too blessed to be stressed. Above all I am thankful for Life and love. x

  3. 2 days ago I watched Arlie be loaded into the back of an ambulance after I found her crumpled unconscious against a tree. I thought she was out front building a snow cave but our neighbor boy had brought out his sled and she was too excited to try going down the hill that she forgot that she needed a helmet and mommy's permission before doing so.

I am so, so thankful that she is OK (she has a concussion but that's much better than what was going through my head when I found her lying there gray-faced in the snow) and it's made me thankful for the rest of my family's health and well-being this year. Not everyone can be so lucky and my heart goes out to them.

I'm also thankful that I'm a bossy former dispatcher and trained first responder who gets stuff DONE in an emergency and waits until afterwards to have a mental breakdown. :)

    1. So so sorry to hear this Jenn! That is so scary and am thankful she's doing OK. Hope she'd on her way to making a full recovery. Lucky you had all those skills, I would have been useless, worse than useless. Were you are Dr-nurse in former life, BK?

  4. Lovely post! Birds of paradise in November - not something we would ever see here in the UK(!) but I'm thankful for the gorgeous autumn colours, good health, family, friends and being able to travel. You are right too about the blog comments - they make writing the posts worthwhile! Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Love this post. Gorgeous photo of Cy (and you too!). We had our Junior primary school carols/ nativity play last night, which made me laugh a lot all night, but starting with my 3 year old, who was getting himself ready to go and watch his older siblings perform, and walked into my bedroom with a baseball cap in his hand, put it on his head and said "I think this works" in a serious tone before checking himself out in the mirror. No idea where he got that one from but I just cracked up laughing!!
It's been a very trying year for a number of reasons at our place, and I'm thankful that we've made it through to the end, and that we're still laughing as a family. xx

  10. In Canada, Thanksgiving was in early October. But that does't stop me from being thankful today for many friends, for important rights and responsibilities, for good food and water.

Happy Thanksgiving! Blessings and Bear hugs!

  20. I've been indoctrinated into the culture of Thanksgiving by an American friend of mine. I've still hoping to gatecrash someone's Thanksgiving dinner just so that I can experience all those American pies that I've read about, sweet potatoes etc and of course, the colossal turkey.

  22. I'm grateful for my health .. and for the health of my family, because that's the most important thing as I've learnt in the past year. And I'm really grateful that I've discovered the world of blogging - it's led me to such fun times, such laughter and such great moments reading wonderful writing online (that would be you by the way!) 27. Happy Thanksgiving! Among many other things, I am grateful for health and that my brother and family members still have their health. My Mom and I were just saying how much things have changed from last Christmas to this Christmas, you never know how the year will turn out. I love hearing everyone's stories too. Thanks for your great blog, I always have a ton of laughs! xx

  28. I'm thankful for having contentment in my life at the moment. As my son opened his advent calendar this morning I realised that he will probably be away next December - at University. That made me a bit sad and then I thought - I can send him one in the post and his father and I can eat all the chocolates in our own calendar next year!
Lovely post, as always, Jody x

  29. This year was lucky enough to say thanks twice - once at the Canadian, and the second time at the American Thanksgiving I celebrated in the States. So I am thankful for having so many great friends!
