Summer Frock

I hadn't popped into my friend Lesley's store for ages, she was having a sale. I found this navy and white chevron dress which I've worn three nights in a row. After years of loads of mistakes filling my wardrobe, I've realised a dress is a bit like finding a partner or a new house or new school. You need to like it immediately, you shouldn't have to overthink or intellectualise. You can't think: I'll take in the waist and it'll be fine, might look great on the promenade in Nice (but oh yeah, I'm not going there).

The blue is lighter than it looks in photos

Lesley has some necklaces made by an Oakland jeweler from old vintage pieces that I liked too

Here's some other Lesley frocks that I auditioned.

Re-auditioning long white at home

I really loved doing that round-up last time, so here's some other frocky news from friends around the world:

Heather says this is her current fave dress - "coral from bisou bisou and this is frolicking on the beach in the Algarve, Portugal last night after sangrias......yes, I could stay here forever! "

Heather of Stylemindchic in Portugal

Love this picture last year of Wendy and Dani BP getting together in Dani BPs place in Canada. You will love both their blogs; Dani BP has introduced me to the wonder of Brora and leather gloves and Wendy is wise about many things, including shopping and vinegar.

Dani BP of DaniBP Mop Philosopher and Wendy of One Can't Get Over the Habit... in Canada

Dani is scrupulously strict when adding another frock to her wardrobe: fit, print, quality of material, shoe options; everything has to align - this J Crew option went back.

Dani sent this back

Alexis Grace never posts any photos of herself so I asked her to send me one and tell me what she's up to: "I've been spending my (eternal) Singapore summer exploring South East Asia (Bali and Thailand down, hopefully Kuala Lumpur in the next few weeks before heading off to Germany to spend time with my family), working all hours - I am the "Corporate Director of Social Media" for a luxury hotel company--- sounds fancier than it feels given the fact that I work from home and social media is a 24 hour beast.  I also have a wonderfully adorable but equally demanding 20 month-old in need of constant entertainment.  Did I mention she is potty training?  Fun times. " She's wearing H&M - "I love it when I find something like this there!"

Janet said yes to her vintage Maxi on her trip to Kauai "because it would have been wrong not to."

Just noticed there is a lot of red and orange in this post today!

    1. Your photos of kauai are so fantastic, makes me want to go back there. We went when the kids were tiny and the beach we stayed at was great but the waves were huge for them and lots of undertow. Would love to go back now they are older

  6. Awww-- thanks so much for including me in your round up!!! I take your preface as a challenge to share some photos of myself :)

As for your dress, I love what you picked up - and I agree completely, summer dresses shouldn't require a lot of thought or work.

  7. Great dresses on you, Jody! Love the first and the white one on you.

  8. Love that dress on you, and all the others you auditioned too Jody - think you should have kept the aqua and white striped one as well! They all make you look so tall and slender… horizontal stripes are not really my friend I'm afraid…. too short! xx

    1. Well now this is funny! I thought you were really tall. probably because you're a friend of FF's and I am guessing she is very tall

  9. you are so funny!! Love the frocks. I love Janet. Shared a room with her on a garden tour in England last year. True Story. I made her laugh because when I went to source provisions for a day in the Cotswolds I came back with whiskey and chewing gum. Stay thin xxx

    1. So funny! Did it make the whiskey minty or the gum all whisky? Actually gum and gin sounds more like a plan.

  10. The turquoise stripy looks so comfy you could live in it. My cat would wreck the chevron dress by pulling all its threads.

  11. What I love is that all these dresses look like "happy" dresses!

  12. I agree...you look great. The dresses are very pretty too.

  14. Ooh that white lace long length is a keeper. NO arguing with it. I love Heather in her coral maxi on the beach. I also like the pale blue stripe number in you. You look fabulous. Xx

  15. Chevron dress is sick so is white maxi. Dope! Send to me when you're done with them. Have started dieting in anticipation!!!

  16. How tall are you? I love the Maxi but worry about the length because I am only 5'3". They never look the same when the hem is taken up. Thanks!

    1. I'm 5.7 - usually I don't go near maxis, they mostly look too costumey (or something ) on me, but I think this one is good because it stretchy closer fitted

    2. And thanks for coming over Kelly, just went to you Googly page

  17. The silhouette of that chevron dress is perfect on you! Then again, pretty much everything looks great on you!

  18. You look fab in your new dress... and the long white! Buy it!
I haven't worn a dress in years... all mud and wellies wherever I go.

    1. Yes I looked on your blog for you in a frock. Mind you Kate Moss always pairs her muddy wellies with a floaty frock (at Glastonbury music festival though, I don't think she's doing yard work)

  19. You look fabulous! Just went to look at Lesley's store, and sadly that chevron dress is sold out...

    1. Apparently she's going to bring it back in the Spring. I will get the inside info from her. Also she said the skirty pink number will be coming in other colors. I love the shape of that one, but wasn't sure I would wear the pink so much

  20. The chevron stripes look great on you, but I'm so short, barely reaching 5 ft. it I stand up really tall, but I love the thin striped one. Can't wear large prints either, wish I could because my taste runs to exotic prints, my rear does not.

  21. Love the long white!Did you keep that?I found out from Linda that all her clothes are made in SAN FRAN.........I will check her out!

    1. They are all made in Oakland which is even cooler. I've been to the factory and its neat to see the women zooming up all those colorful frocks.

    2. I love that they are made locally! They just got even fabber!!

  22. All the dresses look great on you...and I have a weakness for chevron..and navy. My fave dress is a white linen shift from Target(because I'm classy like that). I just noticed Wendy of "One Can't Get Over The Habit", lives very close to me...small world.

    1. Denise - you get double points for finding a fave dress at discount. (anyone can dress well at the fancy stores, as my friend says)

  23. Oh my gosh you look fabulous in these dresses! The chevron is great, the white is perfection, but I also LOVE the aqua striped belted one on you. It could not look better. You should get it.

  24. My daughter recently bought a black and white striped 'matelot' style dress and it looks sensational on her, as the blue and white does on you. Also love the white one. Tres elegant!

    1. That would look great on her. Can't believe we have all these fashion terms down - me with my chevron (a word I had previously never heard of) and then matelot comes along...Oh ley, oy ley oy lety

  25. I'm 5'7 too so you can send the frocks that failed the audition to me and I'll give them a second chance!
I seem to have gone for skirts this summer - have three from a company called White Stuff. One of them is reversible so I suppose I have four!

I like the sound of your ambidextrous skirts

  26. That green and white dress is AMAZING on you! I don't know why but I always assumed you were itty-bitty and I could fit you in my pocket, but you're the same height as me! So stuffing you in my pocket would be very awkward. Just like this comment. :)

    1. Actually other people must think that too - I did a back to back with another mother at school after she didn't believe I was the same height as her. Must be because I'm so shy and retiring...

  27. Fabulous chevron dress. Only someone with your figure could carry it off I think.

    1. Counterintuitively (as our yoga teacher would always say) sometimes i think horizontal strips can be more flattering..

  28. Loved this dress post. First the Lesley's are gorgeous on you with your figure and I hope you got both the white long and the striped blue one. SO darn cute! I like her vintage jewels too. Fun to see all these ladies and their dresses. I will check out all their blogs and I already love Dani, Heather and Janet. That Kauai dress was fab. You are so right about Dani, she has a great sense of style and quality and I've learned so much from her blog!! Enjoy those dresses Jody! x Kim
