Kate Moss: Never Complain, Never Explain

Kate Moss is one of my favourite people I don't know.  Whatever she wears you want to buy; she can do ingenue, sexy, edgy, indie, whatever. And during her 25 years career she's kept schtum, never whining about being rich, beautiful and haunted or what she would do if she was president of the world. So I felt I'd hit the motherlode when she opened up for the first real time to Vanity Fair. One glaring omission in the article - how in the heck is she 5.7 (the same height as me) and 110lbs?

I have never been 110lbs - not even close, even after my recent deep cleanse. And even if I ate one yummy carrot stick a day to get down to that weight - how do you maintain it for 25 years? She never answers the question. Asked about being tagged with "heroin chic" and anorexia she says: "I was thin, but I was doing shows, working really hard...At that time I was staying at a Band B in Milan and you'd get home from work and there was no food. You get to work in the morning there was no food. Nobody took you out to lunch when I started."

The early years...from Vanity Fair

No food in Italy? That's like me shopping before I went to France because there is nothing to buy there. Also same as skinny mother celebs who say: "What keeps me this slim? I'm just running around after my kids all day!" No you don't run around after kids - you slump on the couch while they tear through the house, then slump on a park bench as they tear around the sandbox run, then you shovel their leftover full-fat Mac'n'cheese into your mouth instead of putting it in the garbage.

Anyway I still love her and in these photos she redefines sexy, with her Russian doll ability to portray layers of fragility, naughtiness and girl next door but you'll never know me sweetness.

Talking of sexy-and-you-know-it (was I?) remember I said I was looking at fifty shades of grey...to paint my formerly white living room? This and our newly yellow door - which is really YELLOW! -  is my only decorating for Fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's it, painting this room grey - whoohoo!

Our newly painted living room. Driftwood chair
More sexy-and-you-know-it stories (NOT!): I've sworn off dresses and skirts until we go to New Zealand at Christmas time. That's because I'm "saving up" my leg shaving until then, so trousers it is until then - and hence my new "going out" uniform. (Bit worried about this hippy purple of the jeans, it was worn by a cult called People of the Sun when I was a student in Wellington, NZ...)

Jersey, jeans from here

Old Lulu Guinness bag, new bracelet

Any sexy-and-you-know-it (or NOT!) stories from you?

  1. I love that sweater!!! I've always had a "thing" for Kate too. I think she is gorgeous. I think her size is just good jeans. I'm glad she stays out of the news now. Going to NZ? Awesome for you and your family. I trust there will be a huge blog update with great photos upon your return! (I love the grey)

  2. That jumper is very cute and I am so glad I am not the only person who 'saves up' my leg shaving.......makes perfect sense doesn't it?

  3. That "running after my kids all day" statement also drives me crazy. And I'm also want to quit shaving my legs for winter. Why bother when they're covered anyway?

  4. Yes, Kate has never moaned and gossiped...and that is very unusual and admirable.
    Love your jumper!

    1. She must have at least a couple of books of lovely gossip in her. Though she admitted last night that she didn't even write the book that is being launched on her career (which she was credited with writing...at least she's honest)

  5. I interviewed her back in January, and believe me she is to beauty, what I am to being teetotal. But look at you! You've had 20 kids and you're like a pipe cleaner! Furry legs are fun, take it from me!

  6. SKitten, heading over read that - I did love your recent interviews with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, you really captured their essence of their intellectuality.

  7. Jody, Love that sweater. So pretty. I have always admired Kate Moss's style. She just has a off-handed way of putting things together. I'm sure she is not the paragon of health though. What was that quote she said, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Kinda scary. I think she lives on cigarettes.

You are so fortunate to go to New Zealand for the break! Can't wait to read all about your trip. It's already coming soon!

    Happy weekend!

    1. Yes ciggies, champers and coke if the press are to be believed. Skinny might taste better to her - but she did not taste the chips cooked in goose fat that we had last night at Hopscotch, Oakland's latest restaurant!

  8. Who'd think Kate could have the Marilyn look. Very everything you said.

As for stories ... umm ... you know the reason why you're going to be in trousers for the next while? Why do you think you pretty much always see me in trousers?

  9. I did make-up for some of Kate's first test shots......she ate chocolate and smoked cigarettes same as any other girl.......the thing was I swear she was 16 then which means she would be........40!!!

    1. Fascinating - need to hear more! A friend did photoshopping on her 15 years ago (when it was called something else) and said she looked really rough, but the cheekbones always shone through. She's 36 I think?

  10. I guess if you get paid to look gorge and skinny, you find a way to keep it up - I still remember seeing her all young and innocent in Seventeen mag YEARS ago. She looked so fresh then, but damn, Kate still looks good!

  11. I cannot believe that Kate Moss has been in the business for 25 years -- OMG! Yeah, I haven't seen 110 pounds since college - although, I'm only 5'2. :) As always, you look lovely. BTW, love the gray room and that chair is very cool. Love that. As far as sexy and I know it? Never really had that feeling about myself. Oh, well!

  13. I've never been a Kate Moss fan, probably cos I remember her inital 'heroin chic' look (and hated it) and then saw her in a documentary about her BFF (James Brown hairdresser) where I was left with the impression that if I had to spend an evening with her, I'd be really bored, really quickly. But Cindy Crawford .. now she IS beautiful!

  14. Ugh. I hate the "running after the kids" thing, too. What a load of crap to make other women feel bad for not losing the weight as "effortlessly".

And I'm 5'7" and the thinnest I ever was was 115 lbs in high school, but I was only that weight due to youth - I can't imagine what I'd have to do to be that weigh that much today! Certainly nothing enjoyable. :)

  16. 1. The sweater is gorgeous. 2. I just read that article today waiting for my daughter at a swim meet. I fell in love with Kate all over again. 3. The article mentioned Club 55 and I have a friend who eats there every week - I now know how cool she really is - much cooler than I already thought - oh to live in St. Tropez!

  17. "Sexy-and-you-know-it" stories from a Bear? You wouldn't understand.

Nice purple jeans and top. Merry Christmas in the land of Kiwi! Sounds awesome!

  18. I heard that Kate said that nothing tastes as good as skinny. I guess if I agreed I would weigh 110. I need to go on your mouse diet!

  19. Happy early holidays! I just don't get it. 110 pounds. That is hard. I'm 5'4 and can't get to 110 pounds.

  20. Ok this is my first time here and I LOVE the way your write. You're so real. What you wrote about being thin because people run after their kids...ha!! I love what you wrote! It's so true. 21. She has a look and a style which is her own. I'm not getting any younger and I find myself scrutinising anyone over the 35 bracket to see how they are faring and I have noticed that in recent years when not in a photo shoot situation, she looks "human" which in part is good because it looks as though the botox is being held off. But if you were born with those cheek bones - you should use them. As for yourself, you look lovely and your figure is as good, you make even simple jumper and jeans look classy. The grey in the room is lovely - very subtle and not overwhelming at all. A success story.

  22. What's 110 llbs in stones and ounces? Have had to google it. Blimey, 7 st 8 llbs ish! That's teeny. I'm 5'7 too and would have to cut all my limbs off to match that...and I'm not big.

    1. Sounds even less in stones, which I've always argued is the way to measure our weight!

  23. I love Kate and have never criticized her uber-slim figure. I used to have the "misfortune" of also weighing in at 105-110 (I'm 5'6"). People criticized and were ugly. It's just the way I came. I ate like a horse. That, however, ended in my 30s and I'm so sad I didn't appreciate it more at the time! I was always semi self-conscious instead. What a waste of a good figure. : (

  24. Love the purple jeans, I looked at a similar pair today, super skinny legs; I remembered I used to have a pair in purple stripes and really ought to get some more... then I remembered I wore the old pair around 30 years ago (I still think I'm in my teens!).... so maybe not! They look fab on you Jody x

  25. Jody, what are you on about?! If I could be as slim as you, I'd NEVER complain ever again in my life. Just found out from a friend that her sister works for Kate Moss' friend. Yes, she's seen Kate Moss a number of times too but sadly for her (unlike me), is thoroughly unimpressed with this whole celebrity thing.

  27. I own purple jeans so we can start our own Moms-in-purple-jeans cult. Reinvent the cult. As always, you made me laugh out loud at your honesty. You are so right when you say there is no running after kids all day. I hate when women use that as their reason for being thin. It makes me feel bad for not being thin AND for not running after my kids:)
