Too Short Shorts

The most shocking scene so far in Mad Men? Hand's down (or rather thighs out) Bob Benson turning up to Joan's apartment in his very short shorts.  This reminded me that my days of short  - or even mid-thigh-length - shorts are sadly over. I am very much in the realm of the Bermuda these days.

If you still have the good gams look no further than this great post by Norcalstyle on all the most glorious less-than-knee-length shorts.

But if like me, you're at the stage of curtesying rather than bowing (as Susie would say), you'll be opting for the Bermuda. Frustrating at the moment - there are no zazzy pairs this season, everyone has obviously opted for the shorties. The other day I asked my friend Kathleen in desperation:"Seen any decent 10-12 inch pairs?" No, not a reference to some weird 50 Shades practise... rather how long is a Bermuda.

First stop of course was Banana Republic which had best quality Bermudas all around in terms of thickness of material, shape and fit.  Still they only had a selection of four colours, white, two kinds of beige and navy blue. At  J. Crew I found four colours, the shorts were not as good a fit (too big in the waist) and the quality of material was lesser,  but the colours included a lovely periwinkle blue. No prints as far as the eye could see there or anywhere else on the internet.

But once I tried on the possibilities I realised the plain old colours are really all you need.

I think the white BR's are nice enough to wear with heels don't you? (sorry overdid the fake tan)

The periwinkle J. Crews are my fave for casual.

Khaki J. Crews with white jacket and heels

Cream BR's with flatties

Today we're off to Big Sky to do some fishin' and hikin' and white water raftin' and stuff that you can drop all the "g's" on - looking forward to seeing you in ten days time!

  1. Have a great holiday! You'll probably need the blue bermudas more than the others for that. :)

  4. Short shorts on men make me tee hee. Bermudas were supposed to be the IT style this summer - I guess they'll make their way to retail next year? I hope so. Nothing better than the perfect slouchy pair with heels as you've demonstrated here!

  5. Have a great time on your trip! I think that Periwinkle pair of shorts is terrific. Bob Benson is such an interesting character on Mad Men - and he has seriously drool-worthy legs. I'm glad the costume director opted for those shorts. Perfect on so many levels.

  6. Too funny. We kid hubs because he prefers short shorts. I have given up on shorts. Do not like Bermuda and am passed the age for shorties.

  7. Love the khaki & cream ones, I'd live and die in them along with flip flops - if the weather here was good enough.
Enjoy your break - I'm very envious of the rafting bit!

  9. These bermudas look very chic on you. Why do mine look dumpy? You have newly inspired me to take a fresh look at this basic. We are heading to the Caribbean for 10 days and I'm in the mood for maxis and caftans....maybe 1 pair of shorts at most.
Have a wonderful holiday in Montana!
    xx, Heather

  10. An idea for shopping bermudas.... golf pro shops - a good one will have a selection for men and women with patterns and colors galore!

Are you drivin' or flyin' to Big Sky? Cheers!

  11. What's surprising is to hear Banana Republic make better garments than J Crew whereas J Crew seems to be quite highly regarded over here (or maybe we don't know any better).

And the only problem with curtseying these days is it plays havoc with the ol' knees.

  12. Shorts look great, but totally in love with your jacket in the first pic!!!

  13. Oh Jody....you have got me on a 'periwinkle' passion now! You look great whatever you wear of course....enjoy your trip.

  15. I haven't had a pair of shirts on my body in 20 years, at least! I have nice legs, so have no idea why I gave them up. I really like the look of the cream BR ones on you!

  16. I do wear shorts all the time, casually of course. Bermudas look much worse on me than short shorts, I only have one pair of denim bermudas from Lucky that I like but they fit like skinnies. I also don;t see why you could not wear shorter inseam, I think Bermudas actually draw more attention to the knees.

  17. Bermudas are my go-to shorts...this body wasn't made for short shorts...and I am ok with that. Love your outfits!

  19. Men in short shorts scare me. Me in short shorts scares me too. The Bermudas, in whatever color, look really good on you ... it's that elegant, comfortable chic I can't seem to achieve.

  20. You can get away with longer bermudas, thanks to your height and never ending legs. I, on the other hand will look like a stunted dwarflike creature.

  21. I love all 3. I wear shorts as much as I can when the sun shines.

  22. Bob Benson - what a little scammer he is, hey? He was the most fascinating character on Mad Men this season!

You look great in shorts, I've yet to find a pair which fit me well.

  23. Hahaha...short shorts on men!! So funny. That reminds me of my old Highschool gym teacher, he always wore these very short shorts & I used to whistle and sing this advert song for women's Nair 'We wear short shorts, if you dare wear short shorts, Nair for short shorts'! hahaha!! So now when I see men in shorts it reminds me of him :))) He was the best teacher really!! Have a gorgeous week doll xx

  24. You look gorgeous in Bermuda shorts, (which make me look dumpy) so I am having a moment of shorts envy...haha. Hope you had a wonderful 4th of July weekend!

  25. I am only on season 3 of Mad Men so I haven't seen them start to commit all the fashion faux pas yet LOL

  26. Dear Jody, Thanks so much for your kind link to my shorts post! I have been away and unable to read all my favorite blogs! Just catching up now. I appreciate it so much!

I totally love you in all these Bermudas. You make them look so chic. I agree that Banana does have the best ones. Some I've had for a while and they still look great. The length you have is flattering and a it is more slimming than mid-thigh! Sanctuary also makes slim bermudas like this and a lot of moms around here have them if you don't mind paying $100 which is crazy I think.

The Mad Man photo cracks me up! Why have men's shorts become soooo baggy? Maybe they can find some happy medium between the 80s shorts and now.

Hope your trip is a blast. Can't wait to hear about it!

    xxKim

  27. Even I wore short shorts in the sixties.
The biggest fashion boob I ever made was a maxi length divided skirt. People would stop and stare - and laugh!
Makes me go red to think of it - the humiliation!

  28. I think these shorts look great on you. I love what you picked.

  29. They look beautiful on you! And you can definitely wear heels for the BR shorts. That would look pretty! I need to start watching Mad Men. I heard it's so good!

  30. Just catching up after my holiday. Well we arrived back to warm sunshine - real summer weather here in the UK and I can wear my shorts too - very similar length to yours and you are right plain classic colours are the best. I love your J Crew ones but I daren't buy any or the weather might change!

  32. For white water rafting I would require brown shorts. (Love the periwinkle colour).

  33. shorts and I parted company some time ago!!

  34. Only Mad Men would wear shorts that short. And me in the 1980s...

  35. Oh my goodness, Jody - you are so cute!! You are making me want to go out & buy some shorts now and I haven't worn them in years and years!!

  36. You can't beat the good old British Army issue drill shorts/officers the use of. Proof against every insectisoid based pests and most women.

The blokes around here still talk with fond memories of stubbies, and I don't think they're talking about beer.

  37. Oy, Mad Man. I tried to get into that show, but all the smoking put me off.

  38. Jody- The last two days... very short shorts! One pink and another a quick-dry tribal print Patagonia pair I picked up at a tag sale (and they still had tags, too!) It's summer!

You look fantastic, as always. I think I'll bring my quick-dry pair of shorts on the white water rafting trip I've planned this summer - please let us know how your river ride went!
