What's Your Style?

What's the style of your home -  or the house you would like to have? Modern, French country, shabby chic...or you might have invented an eclectic hybrid style of your own? This weekend I did a story for the San Francisco Chronicle on a new website called Decorist which analyses your style for free. Plus two cool new design apps for your phone DesignMine and Furnish which shows what that chair will really look like in your living room.

On Saturday my "Novel in A Year" writing group met at our tutor's home. What would you call Ellen's style.... Literary Spanishy?

Living room where Ellen tells us how to write a book in a year

The table where we have lunch around the pool with the muses

Have you seen this video of Sarah Jessica Parker doing a small tour of her house and answering 73 rapid fire questions (do you think she rehearsed the answers?) She seems so likeable...is this the real her? Or is she doing Carrie? Her house seemed modest (for a celeb!) and comfortable.

Met three women today who all liked these stripey outfits that Sherri has in her shoppe. As per Janet and Wendy's shopping philosophies, I don't need it, I already have a striped jacket. I'll go and visit the outfits though, it's only fair.

Today I interviewed new-style florist Anna Campbell at The FloraCultural Society and she fashioned me an arrangement that I could wear as a backpack - look!

This is Kevin and I doing an Irish jig on Saturday night before heading out (gosh I'm wearing that same green top!) Knees are perilously higher than the Regulation Irish Jig I was taught at Mrs Shirley Dibble's School of Ballet. Just so we're clear.

And we haven't even had a drink yet...

Terry, one of the dancers in my Platinum hip hop dance group, was turning 60. She held her party in an Oakland warehouse, home to three performing sisters called T-Sisters. They live upstairs and they've built a little theatre downstairs. Very cool. When kids are gone I want to live somewhere which has one or two rooms (I'm not sure whether I'll have the theatre) something small. Or be an auld Eloise and live in a hotel.

Here's Terry!

Where do you see yourself?

  1. You definitely look good in green!

I don't think I have a real preference for home style because I like different styles and could probably never make a choice if it came to it. Good thing I don't have to. :)

I was in a lovely modern house yesterday but it looked kinda empty and not cosy.

  2. Love your ideas about style Dahling.

We have developed our own down here.

Our home is in the style called Comfortable, with just a hint of "Lived in" plus the faint aroma of dog.

My own personal style can also be called comfortable, and is based on the famous Fred Dagg look. Black singlet, trusty army shorts (1942 issue) and jandals. I just don't think that gumboots work indoors, even with Diamanté and Steel toecaps. Do you?

Just ambling down to 4square for a Tiptop. Seeyah

  3. According to the Decorist I am traditional at heart with eclectic picks thrown in. You guys must have had a great time at your party if that was just the before picture. I see myself right where I am for the rest of my time. Of course I will have a lawn boy, a pool boy, a house boy, and a guy named Sven as my personal assistant.

  4. This post was so much fun and congrats on your article for the SF Chronicle. Also that floral backpack is genius and so a cute idea to carry a boutique.

I always like a twist of something - often just jewelry or a kind of texture! I am crazy about that library! Saturday I mooned over sjp's apt- love, love, love! I am loving the jig!

  7. I don't know where I will end up in my dotage-perhaps one of the offspring will become so wealthy she can buy her mother a' nice little place'. But with the amount of work we are putting into this house, I suppose we will be here forever.
You and Kevin have obvious jig talent-I tip my hat to you.

  10. That backpack floral arrangement is soooo good! I want one too! perfect accessory.

I must say I think my house is modern trad. Only because my husband is a conformist - his words - and I have no energy to argue with it. But the other day I saw on a blog that shall remain nameless - apparently the latest is baroque minimalism...Honestly...I didn't leave a comment.

    1. That's an (sp??) an anathma, or at least ambidextrous as my sisters say. I think we're all getting to the hyphenated home tastes like everyone here is a writer-actress-mother-runner-humanitarian-veganarian

    2. Oh dear, Oxymoron was what I was thinking of. Got. to. finish. coffee.

  12. Hmmm mine is a bare walled place with more cat toys and stand then my stuff lol no style. But a nice little small house out of the way would be fine by me.

  14. So according to Decorist: YOU... LIKE ECLECTIC STYLES AT HEART WITH AN EYE TOWARDS INTEGRATING MORE MODERN LOOKS

    This seems pretty accurate...

By the way- one day I am coming to visit and going for a drink with you and Kevin--- something tells me it would be a lot of fun!

  15. My ideal home style would be coastal, light and airy with a view of my expansive lawn leading down to a body of water (could be an inlet, bay or beach). Obviously that's not happening any time soon, so for now, my style is a bit like SJP's house but less "Stuff" in it. I love the fact that she has a ping pong table right in the middle of the formal floor.

  16. I'm so flattered that anyone would even think our home has a style. It just is.

  17. Our place is 1928 Contemporary, because, well, it was built in 1928. My wife tries very hard to keep it clean and tidy. I do too, but have had terrible success. My study is wall-to-wall books and papers (especially papers). The bedroom dresser has multiple items on it's surface, which I have not put away.

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

  18. Do be careful. Jigging in those heels is living dangerously.

  19. Love that house! And you look smashing in green.

  20. Loved this. You and Kevin do the most fun things. What a cool group. I wish I lived near so I could join!! That photo of you with the flowers is darling. xx

  21. I saw some of that video of SJP, I thought it was pretty fun with the questions and considered doing something that that in writing form on my blog! I def think she received the questions before hand so she wouldn't feel like there were any she didn't want to answer and so she would have the answers on the top of her head! Love the home where you met with your group, looks so relaxing. That's what my style is, comfort! But if I really got into it and gave it more effort I would love something with wood beams, an open floor plan, a beautiful modern kitchen and a big bathtub with claw feet! Happy Weekend!

  22. Hmm not sure if my comment posted?! Love that 73 questions with SJP, I didn't watch it all though, but I was thinking of doing something like that in writing form on my blog!

Love that home where your group met, looks so inviting and a perfect place to relax!

    Love your outfits!!

    Happy Weekend! xoxo

"kittens or puppies !!??" i loved that home tour and i don't think i've ever seen her in a movie nor watched that show. i watched all of this though it was fab! she's a good egg, you can tell. i think she was wondering why she got the place all cleaned up for an interview that didn't touch on her house much though.
