In Cannes with Sophia Loren

I was loading the dishwasher, as you do, when I got an email from my sister Pietra, who you might remember makes documentaries. She'd been invited to Cannes. She'd just met Jane Campion, the Kiwi director and Jury President and attended a master class by Sophia Loren.  Lucky!

Sophia Loren in Cannes in 1960. Behold di Bellezza!

Pietra says: "Sophia Loren said she will be 80 in September and her philosophies now are life continues to be hard but she finds contentment in the small things finally. She looks amazing - is dressed completely in white with these very cool white boots. We just saw a clip from a movie she made with Marlon Brando directed by Charlie Chaplin. She said Marlon was not a nice person at all...." I emailed Pietra back that apparently Marlon Brando read the lines off the fruit in the fruit bowl.

Sophia Loren, 79, in Cannes this week. Still wondrous after all these years. I notice she dressed monochomatically, all in red or white or cream.

Pietra says the photo below shows: "Just a few Kiwis and Aussies paid for by the NZFC and Screen Australia having lunch in this gorgeous house in Cannes. Jane Campion gave a great speech about how we Australasians do so well because we don't give a toss about the class structure and preconceptions of the Europeans. I sat next to Guy Pearce (Australian actor, here in a film in competition The Rover) who was a bloody good guy and we laughed and drank wine and I had two meals as there seemed to be extras and being a poor filmmaker, it seemed like the right thing to do - others did it too!"

My sister Pietra (right) with Jury President  Jane Campion (middle) and Rachel Gardner, producer

The old sister blister in Cannes - standing where Bardot and Kelly have stood before her

Kevin then came in and said he'd made a slideshow for Tallulah's birthday and uncovered this corker old snap of Tallulah and Cy in our old kitchen:

Teddy had that same expression today after emerging from Tiffany's wash-blowdry-and-scarf treatment. Cy protested the yellow scarf was not manly enough for Teddy.

Cy would not be so amenable now..

I asked my friend for a photo of Kylie in her dress for Junior Prom. They say thank you for all the advice; they liked the idea of the pop o' color which they used on the sandals. Kylie was the same height as her date (nearly 5ft10) so opted for flat ecco sandals and, as Blue Booby predicted, she didn't want a clutch as she thought she would lose it. Kylie loaned her Mum's heart necklace, hair down as the dress was strapless - and she was good to go. Her smile makes me feel so happy.

The odyssey of the pink jeans continues...

With Frank and Eileen linen shirt and $30 slides from Aerosoles (hiding my hands because they look like pieces of cod)

And here I am, back loading the dishwasher again, awaiting further news of the outside world. Please fill me in!

    1. Aerosoles? Really? I had never been in the store but a food dude said my feet are really bad now I have to stop with the other ones. I thought they looked vaguely reminiscent of those Chloe ones without the price and they are comfy. (Tallulah said: "Oh, so you kept those?" which I think was the thumbs up, hard to say)

    2. Actually I just checked and you're right, they're not ! I must have confused them with another brand ! Good news because now that I'm ooooold, I have to look for comfy shoes too !

  2. Very exciting!
    Sophia Loren is gorgeous...
That pic of Tallulah dressing Cy up is bloody funny! I have a pic of Dom dressed up by Maya that I'll up have to dig out one of these days. She's got him in a Disney Snow White dress with a cat shower cap on his head. He looked like widow twanky!
We've just been out buying Uggs for Maya's 13th birthday tomorrow! No dishwasher to pack, but I'm contemplating a glass of Shiraz seeing as it's past 5 pm. Just.
    Have a fab weekend!

  7. Kylie looks beautiful. Hope she had a great time. We had a terrible storm blow through the other night so I will be spending my day picking up sticks, limbs, halves of trees...we lost two trees and our power for about three hours. Then I shall slug the rest of the long weekend with my hubs and the lovely Miss Em. Yay!

    1. It certainly doesn't smell like it does! (the dishwasher) Its disgusting. Apparently we need to put a cup of vinegar in there to sweeten it up. it's a Asko and its way too delicate for us

  10. I thought Sophia Loren was gorgeous when she was young and she seems to have done nothing but get better with age. Envy your sister, have always admired Jane Campion's work.

    1. How funny that she (Sophia Loren) said in her talk that she was not considered photogenic at the time. I guess back then they loved the Grace Kelly look. Apparently she switched from English to french to Italian driving the translator crazy. Brilliant

  14. Your sis is certainly rubbing the right elbows. Absolutely loved Campion's Bright Star which didn't get the audience support it deserves.
Kylie looked lovely however, I would encourage her to never make concessions on account of men if that is what she did. (see Campion, Jane)
I'm a strapping 5'6" and have on several occasions stood in a lobby on a 1st date casting a disappointing downwards glance at flats diminishing a fab outfit. Cross exam reveals concession on my behalf. GSL not pleased. Doorman directed to hold cab. Quick elevator ride up for remedy. Leggy brunette/redhead/blond reshod in sexy heels. Flats thrown to pup with orders to "chew beyond recognition". Delightful evening commences.

    1. Gosh have not watched Bright Star yet. Will search for it toot sweet.
You've pretty much written a couple of good scenes from a romcom screenplay in your last par. Who would play you?

    2. Christian Slater although I'd insist he get in the best shape of his life and over to my barber for close cropping. We look like brothers and our voices are nearly identical I'm told (funny how our own voices always sound alien to us).
Anthony Minghella summoned from the grave to direct. Only he would know how to get it right.

    3. GSL just had to look up what he's been in recently, of course Heathers is the classic of all time and i very nearly watched it for the hundreth time the other night.
He was recently in Nymphomaniac. Funnily enough the editor of that film (and most of Lars Von Triers films) Molly is friend of Pietra's and was the editor for her last film, Maori Boy Genius and now Pietra's new one about something in Afghanistan.

  15. ***Oh and I was angry at myself for not mentioning on delightful Talluleh's birthday (love those pics with T & Cy) how I was touched at her overcoming her struggles with learning and I think having to struggle to find your gifts can be a great asset. It gives one greater understanding and appreciation of their power and the drive to use them to their fullest.

My little brother struggled mightily in school barely graduating from high school as an undiagnosed dyslexic. A wonderful girl his age sought to undertake what his family didn't and identified the problem. Community college then followed where distinction was earned then onto a bachelor's and master's degree. His prodigal elder brother only recently finally visited him as little brother now is aka Managing Partner and gave Prodigal office tour along with his beautiful daughters and charming son...that wonderful girl who made all this possible is their mother; that little brother who found his gifts is her devoted husband; that shamefaced Prodigal is thinking about how to show how proud he is of them all.

    1. Wow, that was an amazing journey. Good on your brother and the woman who made it possible in overcoming this. Community college then a bachelors and a master's and now Managing partner - he really stuck at it. And its true that good things really do come to those who work at it and resist complecency. I can't imagine how hard it must be to have trouble reading. Even reading a blog must be hard you would think. Also reading for me is such an enduring pleasure for me it does break my heart that T. isn't able to immerse herself in a book.
When I was at journalism school i was really good friends with a couple, he was studying for his master's in engineering and she had to go over all his lessons in the evening and read them to him and he had to pretty much remember them from her words.

  16. Your sister is almost as pretty as you are, but how exciting to meet Jane Campion. I love her films. And Kylie's dress looks much cuter on than it does hanging since for some reason it looked like it was for a much larger person. The pink is good.

    1. I still have the image of The Piano in my mind, it was haunting wasn't it? The beach where it was filmed near Auckland is just as haunting as you would think, everything is reflected in the shallow sands.Yes, I thought Kylie's dress looked better on as well, somehow the skirt was more bell like as though it had petticoats underneath...

  17. I'm glad I'm not the only one mucking about with household chores while people taunt me with glam photos from Cannes. I have two pals in the business and their recent FB photos make me weep with envy.

Sophia is fantastic. No surprise that Marlon was not nice: he always seemed to be a beast.

Kylie is a stunner and the photos of your two kids make me chuckle. I have a similar forced princess dress shot of my two that I keep on my vanity. Delicious!

    1. Ha ha, yes they are the taunters aren't they? Funny that everyone else did all those deep immersion acting methods and Marlon did the fruit reading. At the end of the day I suppose the screen loves them or it doesn't.

  18. What a star studded post! I'd love to meet Jane Campion and remember Guy Pearce fondly from his 'Neighbours' days.
I recently watched a clip of Sophia in the film where she is screaming at soldiers after her daughter had been raped. It was incredibly moving . I think she was underrated as an actress.

Sadly really gifted people like Marlon seldom are nice.

Lovely photos of your children. I'm late to the pink jeans but they remind me of a nightmare I used to have when I dreamed I was walking down the street in just a short vest.

    1. Agree, I remember that movie she was in as the mama, so good and so moving with all these kids around and another actress would have made nothing out of it.

      The color is so very close to skin, please shorten the wrinkles out of your ankles. (delicate question to put up for your blogland friends) xoxo :-}

    3. Haha! yes now I see, they do look like the elephant wrinkles around the ankles, turn up will do it, actually in real life they're not so close to the skin. Will be having nightmares about them now myself!

  19. What a glam life your sister leads (well, occasionally at any rate!). Guy Pearce used to knock around in my old neighbourhood in Melbourne. And by that I mean he drove a beaten up old station wagon with his dog in it, and would schlump around the cafes blending in seamlessly with the locals.
We have pictures of our youngest in a tutu looking miserable too. The lot of the younger brother I'm afraid! xx
