Help! Accessories Ideas Needed for this Prom Dress

My friend M. just emailed me this picture of her daughter's Junior Prom dress.  M. is the busiest woman I know and they need some speedy help on the accessories! The dress is strapless and black and white. Her daughter is 16, long brown hair, 5ft9 and of German-Korean origin. She asks: should they do a big statement necklace because it's strapless?

Junior Prom dress: it's strapless

My first thought was:  - I am blimin useless with accessories, what would I know. Every time I buy something I torture myself with what necklace to wear with it. So I thought I would consult with my two in-house stylists, Jackson, 14 and Tallulah, 12. And with you all too.

1. Necklace: In-house stylists say no statement necklace, just simple gold chain with maybe heart at the end?

2. Hair: Half up, half-down we reckon:

3. Shoes and clutch: Gold plus colour. So colour in the shoes (blue, purple, pink, orange) and silvery-gold bag. Or the other way around: silvery-gold shoes and colorful bag.

So option A:
gold sandals:

And orange clutch:

Or aqua clutch:
Mimicking geometrics in the frock
Or pink:

Wahay too pricey but nice (maybe the Mama could have it afterwards...or the Mamafriend?)

Or purple shoes:
oops, just saw the price on these, maybe too expensive

and gold clutch:
Diamond clutch: mimicking the geometrics in frock?

Gold canteen: too gold?

(Of course I'd have done this in Polyvore if I'd had any computer skills. I'm complete luddite and even screenshots are tricky for me.)

Now your go. What accessories do you suggest?

  1. I like the idea of a statement necklace. She could also add a gold sparkly belt. She could have a lot of fun with color since the dress is black and white. Excited to see what she lands on. :)

  2. I feel panicked myself now. Statement necklace only if it doesn't catch on her hair otherwise she is going to be fiddling all night. Strapless is hard enough to maneuver but a statement necklace that doesn't sit well is just not worth it and too distracting. If safe - gold shoes and diamond clutch. Purple shoes if she is confident otherwise at that age one can obsess about whether or not she made the right decision! ( I remember proms very well and all that angst) Hope she has fun!!

    1. Also the fiddling and the sticking, I feel that way about lip gloss

  3. I say gold shoes with a sparkly belt as Comment #1 suggested, orange clutch and hair as YOU suggest to show off that Miss K's gorgeous face! No necklace, just earrings and bracelets. Her face is stunning and dress will show that off!

    1. Agreed - Her wide smile is the best accessory eva

  4. I have to nod and agree with you as far as I'd get is add a shoe or two lol

  5. I have a history of deferring to Talluleh and my confidence in her continues to grow with the quite correct "no statement necklace" and very charming half hair updo. I'll bet T shares my keen eye and will direct our client towards the purple pumps and diamond clutch. I suspect a glass slipper may appear later in the evening.

    1. These days i am finding myself deferring to the T on many decisions.

  6. I favour the half up half down hair, no necklace, gold strappy sandals and pink clutch. How fun to be that age!!

    1. I reckon, but I guess sometimes it doesn't feel it at the time. Truth be told she agonised over the dress.

  7. Statement necklaces just don't seem to be the thing at that age...she has youthful décolletage let her show it with a simple necklace. Skin is in unlike us turkey necks. Since it is strapless the hair needs to be down or half up like you suggested. Purse doesn't matter because she won't take it in unless she is driving. A modest heel is ideal but she'll just take them off after thirty minutes. Can you tell I recently did this say last year.

    1. BB you are the voice of experience. Yes I can't remember owning a bag let alone a clutch until I was 35. I asked T how she even knew about clutches and she says Runway viewings.

    2. BB - how funny just heard that she doesn't want to carry a clutch as she will lose it!

  8. I agree, no necklace. The pattern on the skirt though a simple black and white is quite busy so I wouldn't do a pattern on the clutch, bright colour pops or metallics are just right for shoes and bag, maybe a cocktail ring to bring out any colour she may choose for shoes or bag?
    I hope she has fun!

    1. POp o color on the cocktail ring is a great way to go

  9. I vote for hair half up or all down. Gold or metallic shoes and bag. No statement necklace or belt...these would draw the eye away from her pretty face. Some fun earrings would be nice and not too high a heel so she's comfortable and can enjoy herself:). Oh what fun to be young and able to wear anything. Do report back. xo

  10. No way on the statement necklace but then I really do not care much for accessories. However, I do love that diamond clutch. Gold sandals.

    1. I definitely can't do a statement necklace these days now my neck has gone to the teddys.

  11. Hello Jody,

We cannot begin to offer any better suggestions than those from your eminent commentators from the world of high fashion and Talluleh. What a style team to have to draw upon.....even the inimitable Ms Wintour would be hard pressed to conjure up better advice.

All we can say is that we love the dress......black and white works so well in our book. But then, we have practically nothing other than black and white in our wardrobes. We love the idea of something glittery somewhere. And, what about a little touch of vintage in a ring or a handbag......always good we think to have something that is individual. And, the best accessories are smiles and laughter.

    1. Oh that's interesting. Loads of luminaries do that including Tom Ford (two wardrobes of same white shirt) and Brian Ferry, trying to think of others who do the black and white too.

  12. Big respect to Tallulah for her wise suggestions! I would say tick to the half up, half down hair style. Tick to no statement necklace (but maybe a simple chain) And my preference would be black strappy sandals and a brightly coloured clutch ... either the pink or orange. Actually, I'd quite like that orange one for myself! But let's face it ... if it's Prom night, she's going to look young and gorgeous no matter what accessories she chooses :)

  13. No on necklace - black strappy sandals and 1 pop of color with clutch - or match shoes to clutch but still keep same color - with the graphic print you don't need to do more

  14. Perhaps a simple black ribbon choker? I am blimin useless with accessories too. You made me chuckle about the great necklace torture when going out. I always end up annoying J by endlessly putting on then taking off various necklaces. And end up wearing none!
    Love the purple shoes.
Let us know what she ends up wearing, but I say no to statement necklace and yes to cool half updo

  15. I would say gold shoes, orange clutch, no necklace, big earrings and maybe a delicate gold bracelet (or one with a fun tassel). It's a great dress, I hope she has fun!

  16. Julie! How are you, great to have a catch up. I'd forgotten about the possibility of dangly earings! That's what all the stars wear with strapless frocks on the red carpet don't they?

  17. According to my 17 year old. "For the prom, hair should be up. Pop of color and since Orange is in, pop the orange!."

  18. Gold strappy shoes and orange clutch, no necklace, hair up, large pearl or maybe gold monogram earrings, eg

I think a thin gold chain with heart or similar risks looking twee, unless paired with something very different like the ghetto-fabulous/preppy earrings

  19. Hm. Internet seems to have swallowed my comment.

Gold shoes and orange clutch, hair up, big earrings - either pearls or gold monogram (e.g. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/162953186/gold-monogram-earrings-gold-initial?ref=sr_gallery_8&ga_search_query=gold+monogram+drop+earring&ga_ship_to=GB&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery)

A thin chain with a little trinket risks looking twee without something to balance it. Either a chunky gold cuff, or the monogram earrings (which I love for being both ghetto-fabulous and preppy)

    2. Hi Philippa, sometimes it seems the comments get eaten, it's just this stupid moderation thing

    3. Oh that is undoubtedly the case, as I wrote a comment raving about you Jody in the blue dress & updo and did everything right and pfffft into thin air; I was wondering if it didn't actually get sent but then I got notified of all comments thereafter so there is a fly in the ointment of their moderation software.

    4. Yes you're right, I just checked and that particular comment (and thank you for that!) did not come through. So obviously its not sending all the comments through. Maybe I should just go back to the easy comments and just keep deleting the spam. Blogspot is so arcane in some ways.

I hope you'll post photos when she figures it out. So fun having girls..This isn't ever happening over here in mensville. xx Kim

  22. I like the statement necklace idea and the hair idea too. The pink clutch is pretty also. It's a very lovely dress, so I think anything would go with it since it's not a bright coloured dress or anything like that. Very pretty xx

    1. Yes in a way a brightly colored dress makes its own decisions

  23. Here are my thoughts:
Shoes- I would go black and strappy
    Clutch- BRIGHT fun color/pattern
Jewelry- forgo a necklace and go with some fun big earrings
    Hair- Half up/half down

    Cute look!

  24. Late to comment, but I just have to chime in. LOL

No statement necklace, gold strappy sandals and orange bag. Either some earrings to mimic the bottom of the dress, or just a bracelet.
