Prippy - Where Hippy and Preppy Collide

Have you ever thought about giving a name to your style? Turns out I might be a Prippy - half Hippy, Half Preppy -  a label coined by blogger TG of The Prippy Handbook. So it's not my fault that I waste so much time thinking about what new pieces would make my life complete - because I love the boho Hippy and I love the Preppy classics. And maybe, just maybe, I've found Prippy happiness with this gold trench which seems able to span both worlds.

A coat that swings both ways? Preppy, Hippy or just Pimp?

At the Claremont Country Club,  Cy and I

For blogger TG, being Prippy is about F Scott Fitzgerald, vintage James Spader, glittery friendship bracelets, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads and these slipper shoes which are both old world and irreverent.

Stubbs and Wootton

For me, it's about never seeing a stripe I didn't like, but wanting to mess up the neatness with a few lolly-looking skulls or my FU huge rings (normally one at a time).

Skull bracelet

My hippy rings from  Ohope Beach worn with my favourite preppy cardy (these are Tallulah's hands  -  mine are too scary)

About wanting to wear old jeans and sloppy shirt all day like Barbara from The Good Life but also loving Margot's complete, (wee bit over the top) outfits.

The Good Life's Barbara and Margot

And for the last month, flip flopping between wanting the Notting Hill boho of Jessa and the Jackie-O channeling of Marnie on Girls. How cool was Jessa's kimono thingy she wore with sparkly UGG boots on a date? I would look so Mrs Roper in that.

Girls: Hannah with polar opposites; Jessa and Marnie

The ultimate Prippy Queens: Kate Bosworth, Sienna Miller and Mila Kunis and Kate Beckinsale: big scarves, floppy sweaters, the Isabel Marant boot, denim shirts, tailored jackets, structured bags and sparkly earings.  How do they manage to make it look so cohesive and right?

Sienna Miller, via

Kate Beckinsale That's it...I'm getting something pink

Of course, this is the dream. Most days I try for the mix, it's Mrs Brady meets Wavy Gravy.

Are you caught betwixt and between two styles too?

    1. Actually now I've totally fallen in love with New Girl and she is so everything Kate Spade with hearts and bows I might have to leaner leaner towards that in the next season.

  2. Completely! Some days I want to be edgy, black, dark and rock chic - thus my love for all things AllSaints, other days I want to wear leopard print, polka dots and bright colors from J.crew - my closet is confused. Love The Good Life reference:)

  3. What a cute term! And your jacket reminds me of one in the Veronica Beard Fall 2013 collection!

As for me- I like my looks to be sweet with a tough edge...

    1. Oh it is so similar to the one in that collection. Thanks Alexis - some great ideas on how to make it more caj.

  4. Mine varies between middle aged frump and old Italian widow (not in a Dolce & Gabbana way). So inspiring!

  5. I dunno...this time of year finds me with a pony-tail and wellies, accessorised with secateurs...Napa-pruning chic? I don't have a style :(

  6. O - Vino girl I had that look today!

I have a silver metallic linen trench and the skull bracelet in blue - We would look so FAB strolling about together. :-) Happy to know now what to "call It".

    Cheers!

  7. So that's what I am! Prippy! I was confused but now I've been found and now I know I'm prippy. I think. I just thought I was fashion schizo!

  8. Yes!! I love love loved The Good Life and although I wanted to be casual like Barbara I always thought Margot looked great too...it was a confusing time for me! I have a pink linen summer coat that I have only worn once because I feel a bit awkward in it........and all those girls have youth on their side so look fabulous in anything......as do you 'cos you are slim.
For years I wore a black and white Biba scarf with everything because I thought it added an edge...looking back it really didn't but kept me happy.
I still have no style at all and really am quite scared of standing out......don't want to look Baywatch from the back and Crimewatch from the front!

    1. Libby, I have the same "relationship" with pink. Love the colours, it's so happy but I always worry that I look like a housewife in it - which actually I am and I should "embrace it."
Classic "watch" style - love it!!!

  9. I seem to veer between two extremes at the moment: business attire or training kit. The latter doubles as 'leisure wear' and the former as 'going out outfit'.

To my credit at least I do not wear trackie bottoms or leg warmers, and I have NEVER worn Ugg boots.

    1. UGG boots are my life. Probably because I don't have to go to the office (or meet adults persons during the day) I only wish I was younger and could wear them with a kimono.

  10. You are totally Prippy! The most stylish blogger I know, with the clean lines of preppy and the individualism of the hippy. I LOVE it.

My style varies. Because I work from home it's usually Prungy (yes, you guessed it, Preppy and Grungy because who will know that I wore these baggy jeans for a month now if I pair them with a nice polo shirt?)

  11. Love it!! You look marvellous. Perfect combination I'd say!! Have a wonderful week xx

  12. Your combo sounds very stylish. Mine veers between cougar chav - skin tight dresses and high heels and leather jackets showing too much leg with pillar box red lipstick and 90s university student - jeans, t shirt, converse boots and cardigan. I think 'mutton dressed as lamb' or 'has let herself go a bit' usually covers most of my looks

    1. Jenny - love the Cougar Chav - a brilliant alternative to the intertwining C's.

  13. I love your coat, how totally fab! I think I am in somewhat similar territory style wise but my hippy is mostly a fantasy. My idea of cool elegance is flapper style so maybe I am a 'prapper'? Lol

  14. I'm sure that, left to my own devices I would end up looking like a bag lady - anything ancient and tatty as long as it was comfortable. Sadly I have to work, so am forced into smart/preppy mode every day :(

  15. Your gold trench looks great with your blonde hair!

You mean you don't have pink in your wardrobe yet? It's a greta colour for blondies. :) JC has a striped two-tone sweatshirt or Tippi cardis both in cashmere you might like.

    1. Rose, great suggestions, I'll take a look. I did try on the kate Spade candy pink cardy but it was not that flattering as it cut me off at the waist.

  17. Oh I look at sienna miller and love her style I try it and then look like a bag lady or worse still mutton dressed as lamb.

  18. The scarf thing has totally eluded me - cannot do the windy big scarf without looking like under the bridge extra from Les Mis.

  19. I'm trying to distract myself from that amazing gold trench (and I hate trenchs normally, but yours is a serious exception!) to decide what I am. I think Shiny Chic .. can't resist a sparkle or bit of bling, but like to look 'pulled together' if you know what I mean? Only do the real sloppy, slobby look indoors when nobody can see me .. nobody that would judge, that is:) Did I mention I really love those hippy rings also?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thanks FF - and they were only $20! A bit o'bling. I always joke that I am the 11 year old girl when it comes to shiny and our Tallulah is the sensible one.

  20. OK, I don't know prippy from anything else, but you look good to me. And if Sienna Miller is wearing it then it always looks good to me. Copy her and you're on the right track in my book. Not that I'm any fashion expert. I just have a big old Sienna Miller crush.

  21. I forgot how badly I used to covet Stubbs and Wooten shoes. I think I'm over than now, though, I love the message on those pictured!

I think your gold trench is absolute perfection. I also like to mix it up a bit, but I fear I'm fairly ordinary, or rather, classic (sounds much better) with an occasional twist.

  22. If Kate Beckinsale is about the "prippy" life, I want some of that too! ;o) Fantastic gold trench by the way - a real standout piece!

  23. I think you wear your style better than most women I know. I also love to throw in a skull to mix things up.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh I love your style and I so agree you wear it beautifully!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep, utter slob or dressed to the nines, I'm going off my old glam look though, I don't really like that "done up" style anymore. You look fab in everything with your enviable bod.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I still dress like it's 1985 - and have the 28 year old shirts to prove it!

Any true prep knows the punk/prep connection. I impressed an an old school punk just yesterday with my knowledge of Skinny Puppy and The Cure. I've been known to rock some studded clogs for a night on the town :O)

  27. Jody- What a great coat! Gold suits you well. My style is whatever I can find at a thrift shop or a clothing swap and aim for the classics. (and HOPE people mistakenly think I dress like a million bucks!)
