Should You Chambray?

The fabulous Tom and Lorenzo (thanks Linda T for telling me about their blog, I've just lost days of my life) opine: "Because we lived through the 1990s, we hate chambray shirts with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns." Well burn my bum you thousand suns, I'm wearing mine in the nowadays too.

Me at the front door contemplating.... the Nineties?Shirt, clogs, t-shirt
I guess a less floppy, flapping arrangement would look more flattering: I should "create a waist" add a belt or tuck it in. Nah, can't be arsed. I've tried the half tuck but I look like a dork.

Trifecta of French Vogue editors, mistresses of  tu'ck de la demi,  via Joslyn

Tuck angst aside - chambray shirts are easy; venturing into chambray jeans is another thing altogether. Witness the trying on of Isabel Marant, whose "French insouciance" has earned her the devotion of the entire blogosphere. I must be deformed or something because these remind me of that Friends episode where Rachel holds a magnifying glass up to Monica's crotch. In my 20's I more than proud to be part of the famous (in our own lunchtime) Wellington netball team called The Growlers (we could have called ourselves The Vaginas but Growlers had a classier ring to it) but this is a bit ridiculous!

Technically known as "PA" pancake arse

I tried the jeans and shirt from the new AG-Liberty collaboration, not flattering on me either.

I'll leave the chambray jeans to 11-year-old Tallulah.

Or take it in another direction...

How do you chambray? Full tuck with skirt and statement necklace, the half tuck or the loosey goosey? Whatever your tucking philosphy, I leave you on a Saturday arvo with the ultimate chambray song, Stevie Nicks' Landslide.

  1. I like the shirt more fitted with white trousers and flat shoes but I do agree iI feel it is harder to dress on trend in something that I like and my daughter does not say you are not going out in that

  2. Oh half tuck definitely though no where near as chic as Emmanelle. Love your daughter's jeans - I'd wear those:)

  3. I haven't worn a chambray shirt for a long long time, but I don't think it will ever go out of style. I think I would wear it à la Emmanuelle Alt. I simply love her style!

  6. Love chambray and denim shirts. I chambry every which way but never half tuck, always feel silly and like I'm trying too hard. Which is exactly what it is not supposed to look like.

  7. Now, there's something I don't already have in my wardrobe (hubby will NOT believe that but it's true). I do like it alot with the stripes and white, really suits you. But walk away from the chambray bottoms for sure! Those lovely legs deserve better, Axx

  8. I have a crush on your sunny pop of color front door~makes me happy!! Ahhh the 90's so many things come to mind. You look cute in that outfit. By the way, I see you have an ad for Modern Twist. Do you know know Kat by any chance? She is the sister of my cousin's hubby (if that makes sense). Wonderful family!

  9. Jody, Love your first look better than all the chambray shots after. You have a way to put things together..I want your clogs! I have a denim shirt, but never know what to wear it with and then end up taking it off..Thought I'd like it with white jeans. Don't know what my problem is..I just want to look like those editors!

Aren't Tom and Lorenzo funny? I must remember to bookmark them. Well, have a good weekend and you look FAB!

    1. Kim I love these clogs, though they are high you can actually wear them all day long. Got them a couple of years ago and have really got my moneys worth out of them.
yes that's the thing you can wear white jeans all year long in Ca!

    2. I agree. I forgot to say, Jody, you look great, better than the triplets.

    3. Kim - also meant to say Isabel Marant has a pair of similar clogs, but probably much more expensive. Apparently her shoes are really comfy but as FF and I agree I don't get what all the fuss is about IM...
TR - you are too nice!

  10. I watched an interview of WSJ with Tom & Lorenzo along with Tina Craig & Brian Boy. I wrote about it on the blog but I haven't had the chance to read T&L's blog. Will do so now. I'm one of those who does the half tuck in just to hide the jelly belly. I haven't tried chambray shirt yet. It's been so cold that I can't even think of spring clothes yet.

    1. It's seems to be a staple of every Californian woman's wardrobe. It's chillier in the morning and hot most arvos so even better than jean jacket for layering. Yes I got a lot of use out of my winter coats in London.
BTW....WSJ? Tina Graig? Brian Boy? Who are these people. I am sooo out of touch!

  11. I'm not a lover of chambray, but I liked the AG-Liberty shirt on you! I HATE all that half-tuck business. Those Isabel Marant jeans!!! She should be taken out and beaten soundly with them.( preferably a rolled up wet pair) If somebody with your figure can't make them look good, there's no hope for them.

    1. SK - I always shop with no make-up and hair back. If anything gets through that hurdle its a keeper. Didn't think that shirt really got through but schnagged that stripey on in the background hanging up.

  12. *whispers* I don't understand all the fuss about Isabel Marant. Just don't get it. And those jeans are vile - defintely due to the design and not the stunning model (you!) trying them on *whispers*

    2. Oh please do! That's exactly what I think of Isabel Marant ... too chicken to do the post myself! Have already got into enough trouble by saying I think macs are boring & that women over 40 look ridiculous in super distressed jeans covered in rips ... had to hide for a while due to the backlash!!

      Delete
    3. You can't hide here Helen!

      Delete
    4. Ooh Helen, now I'm going to read back over your posts for the distressed jean post. And the macs! I know another writer got some flack for saying women over a certain age should not wear short skirts and I totally agree with that.

      Delete
    5. LOL Sue - should have known you'd find me! Jody, the distressed jeans conversation took place on a bloggers fb page ... I was lambasted!!! Completely in agreement about short skirts too. It's the whole 1966 thing; 19 from the back and 66 from the front! Not attractive!

  13. Did you say, 'a less floppy, flapping arrangement'? Hahaha, well, even if I looked like those guys at the gym (wait a minute... I used to look like them), I wouldn't be caught dead in a chambray. What... they're only for women? ;)

  14. I love it....I have a fabulous chambray shirt bought on a whim from a cheap shop on Oxford Street a couple of years ago that's sort of smock-shaped......never fails to get compliments and hids a multitude of sins!!!

  15. I haven't worn Chambray (although I like both your look & that half-tucked look of the 'French editors'. Not to seem completely outside of the stylish set (I do write a fashion blog, after all!), I dressed the little one in a Ralph Lauren chambray dress today! And she looked quite chic- if I do say so myself!

  17. Sorry for the intro to Tom & Lorenzo. It is a time suck, but sometimes we just need some snarky, gay fashionistas for fun. We can't all be Hillary Clinton out saving the world. Although maybe now that she is retired she is reading T & L too!

  20. Can't and won't do Chambray - already did that in the 90s all throughout high school and yes, I did the half-tuck too. bye high school...

Tom and Lorenzo are pretty snarky but hilarious. Their assessments are usually spot-on (their award ceremony recaps are the best and also their Mad Men recaps).

Speaking of Stevie, LOVE HER and she did an interview with Oprah that's airing tonight. Rolling Stone had a weekend poll going of what was Fleetwood Mac's best song - it's all over the map but the majority of posters named Stevie songs as the best, besides Go Your Own Way by Lindsey.

    1. How funny - I was wondering what happened to Stevie Nicks? She def has the Nineties - no actually Eighties - hair thing going with the big bangs. Incredible voice though and you realise all this belting out and emoting that's happened post American Idol is really un-necessary if your have the good pipes.

    2. Oh she definitely has the 80s hair (and style!) but I love it. Sometimes she'll throw in fingerless gloves too. Thanks for inspiring today's blog post! :)

  21. I bought a denim/chambray (hybrid) shirt just recently from Zara and I'm really looking forward to wearing it just loose and easy. I like the idea of treating it as a jacket too and I might go so far as to do the double denim this year - go me! No full tucking though - I don't need to add to the pouch at the front.

Love to see you write something about the Isabel Marant line. I do like her stuff, don't own any and can see how the label of Emperor's new clothes might fit but I like the styling as it's quite relaxed and easy to wear. I did see some the other day when I was shopping and I was amazed at how tiny some of the pieces were. Eeek. I need never eat again.

  22. The Canadian tuxedo they call it here (denim on denim) not sure why the Canadians get the credit for that one!
Yes, I need to go in and try on a whole lot of her things - I am totally the target audience for her things as she aims for casual stuff. Bit pricey though.

  23. I think my hubby does chambray better than I do. I remember when I met him, in 1987, he had a gorgeous shirt which made him feel all lovely. Oh yes, happy memories.
I used to have a long midi skirt in chambray denim - must hunt it out and see if it's fashionable again! No?

I think men are gorgeous in chambray.
