Conscious Weekend and Anjelica Huston

Had a good giggle over old FF's Consciously Doing Everything following Gwyneth Paltrow's announcement. This conscious living suits me. It's a land where all choices - wobbly or otherwise - are not just valid, they are elevated! Instead of writing for a plethora of deadlines, I lay a-bed finishing Anjelica Huston's A Story Lately Told about her life until 22 years old, growing up in old pile in Ireland and modeling in London and Paris. She says she willed herself to be photogenic, despite big nose, narrow eyes, weak chin and too wide shoulders (her description). I ate two donuts in bed with a toast and rhubarb jam chaser. All absolutely consciously.

Anjelica, 18, with her beloved Dad on the set of A Walk With Love and Death, directed by her father, which she hated being in. More stories here

Angelica says one childhood summer in Ireland there were no adults present. Later,  tired of her father's numerous affairs, her mother left and no one mentioned it. Full of family friends like Marlon Brando and Betty Bascall (someone has to be their friend!) She writes like Hemingway - can't wait for the next one where she meets Jack.

By the way the NY Times says there's a bit of a (passive aggressive) storm in a psychologist's teacup over the provenance of the CU saying. Apparently Gwynnie's person had failed to attribute the phrase to the colleague who had registered it. The colleague had actually heard the phrase from a friend. Don't you wish you could coin a phrase (maybe you have?) I have banned eclectic and plethora (oops) which will provide some impetus to find one.

On Saturday night we went to Juhu Beach Club (Indian street food) a bars-on-the-windows right-under-the-highway place which Oakland does so well. Spicy curryleaf prawns and beet salad.

Juhu Beach Club which could be described as eclectic if I used that word

Loved the monkey wallpaper

Kevin wore the shirt my sister bought him from H&M in Qatar, "cheap as chips" as no one seemed to know who Martin Margiela was. Consciously decontructred.

Wore my birthday zip-up arrangement. Could have got a nice frock but I'll wear this more

Tried a Lorde lip, had to tp most of it off. She was in Oakland but tix all sold out

The clematis consciously unfurled on Sunday like nobody's business.
Teddy likes to eat the succulents to settle his stomach.

Platinum, my dance group, performed a tribute to Stevie Wonder at Broadway Boogie (Yes Oakland has a Broadway too). A really great show with two professional groups. Little kids stole the show which is as it should be.

We followed our current spate of overhyped movies with  Bad Words, a "comedy" about a 40 year old man who enters a kid's spelling bee. Inappropriate where it didn't need to be (giving a nine year old boy a tequila shot? tomato sauce under a  girl's chair? yuk) I watched it so you don't have to. Then Gravity ...I have vertigo just putting my hair in a ponytail so incredibly discombobulating - but not Oscar.

What conscious news from your weekend?

  1. You completely undersold the Platinum gig!!! I would've done a WHOLE post around it!! Fantastic number by the look. I like the costumes.
Gwynnie has always been a bit of nonsense. When is the planet getting off this 'conscious thing' ....it seems to underpin everything. I am focussing on being oblivious and unaware of consequence. Xx

  2. A plethora of jazz hands I see on that stage! (Am I ok to use plethora if it's going spare?)

Our Internet is still consciously broken.
D consciously spilled milk all over his new laptop.
    Love your sunnies!

  5. I'm so happy you are doing the work of the movies for me, saving me time so I thank you! Nice shirt Kevin, very snazzy. And your zip-up will be worn loads, perfect for spring.
We were conscious all weekend I am happy to report!

    1. I saw it styled in the shop with a top and skirt in white eyelet and thought it might be a nice go-over for frocks too (theoretically...have to try that one)

  6. I'll skip that one movie indeed and look at you go at your show, monkeying around lol

  7. Eating two donuts while lying in bed reading a good book is my kind of consciousness! You made the book sound so interesting. Now I will have to search for a copy. I recently realized that, if it is well written, I can read anything. Love your new zip-up and I bet you will wear it a lot. In the Platinum picture, is that you in the front center? How cool! Thanks for the movie heads-up. Something to NOT put on my list!

  8. You look like you are having some serious fun in that dance group!

Teddy looks adorable. How much does he weigh? He looks so tiny! My weekend consisted of taking my pooch (see her pics on my Instagram) tot he vet for her shots. Glad she lost 2.5 lbs, as she was heavier at the last weigh-in. Then it was getting hair done (proof also in my ig pics). :)

    1. Rose, he's supposed to weigh 6and a half pounds. But after all the training and many liver treats he might be even 11 - we are weighing him today. trainer insists its muscle!

    2. Congrats on the pupstars weigh loss - how did she do it?

  9. I saw Gravity not long ago and found the storyline and dialogue really banal. Special effects were great, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the cinema.

Wish I'd been less conscious on Sunday morning when I got in to find my cat had pooed on my duvet. Thank god for washing machines and hot washes!

  11. I consciously try not to give a rats ass about GP or other celebs. She always manages to stick her foot in her mouth...very flexible. Indian food, bad movies, and looks like a great performance. Not to mention donuts and a good book, looks like a great week end. Mine...not so much.

  12. I consciously wondered whether GP's navel is an innie or an outie. Then I consciously considered whether she treats it to any special consciously hand-made by a small but conscious collective of potion-makers in the Idaho hills. It must get consciously tired from being gazed at so much. And so consciously. Gad, what utter piffle.

To consider: is she really an actress, or is the only part she plays Gwyneth Paltrow? Like George C. Scott in his later years, no matter what the name/background of the character, the only role he played was George C. Scott. Watch a few netflix and you'll see what I mean.

Must dash, there's a nasty rumor that Russian troops are massing on the Finnish border and consciously doing preparation exercises. If rumor is true, will have to consciously fret about whether we're heading for peace in our time.

    1. This is going to start me on a George C Scott Binge. I do find she was a bit of nasally voice which is intrusive

  13. This book has my highly intrigued to learn more about her.

  14. Kevin looks very dapper indeed, as befitting the spouse of a broadway star. Consciously befitting.

GP strikes me as someone I would not be friends with. All the eye-rolling and eyebrow raising would wear me out.

  15. I've been consciously cleaning house this week, though I prefer to do it unconsciously, because our daughter is coming to stay for a week before moving to Japan. If I left it in its usual consciously messed up state she might consider putting us into care before she goes.

  16. I've been consciously running late for everything, as I try to field phone calls from estate agents, bank managers and solicitors while trying to pack for a holiday and simultaneously attend every end of term event at school. After all this house buying malarkey is over, i will be consciously uncoupling from every estate agent I am currently involved with!

  17. I am hoping that being unconscious will come back into fashion... along with Moscow Mules and Black Russians.

  18. I'm glad you watched it so I don't have to, because I don't want to! =) Unless I unconsciously watch it...

  19. I have to write to someone about this and sorry jody...you get the brunt of my disgust with Gwyneth because I think you agree....I have followed Goop for several years now and past 6 months I have grown so appalled with the site..it is so out of touch with most of society and even tho we all like the "good" life and finer things life has to offer...most of us can not afford $3,500 dresses or $10,000 a night hotel rooms or the items her site joint ventures on..clothes etc...She has become deluded in her concept of every day normal life and her stupid "uncoupling" makes me ill.....Chris Martin probably kept both of his feet grounded thru the years while she wondered off the planet thus their "conscious uncoupling" gag me!!!!

  20. Indian food is one of those things where if you get the urge then nothing else will do. I reckon she just isn't conscious of what is really going on around her...I don't think most actually have a problem with her hollywood lifestyle bc the same irk doesn't apply to Jennifer Aniston or A Jolie...PS your pout looks gorgeous!!

    but ...

    TEDDDYYYYY!

    I luff him.

This week I have been trying to stay conscious. New job, pneumothorax, new nephew (mine, not mine, half mine) ... it's all go here, so not much time for sleep.

This weekend I will be consciously unconscious.

  27. oooh I had the Anjelica book for Christmas and loved every word....had such a crush on her when I was a teen, still do.....can't wait for the next one. Juhu Beach Club looks delightful....I've had chai and somosas on Juhu beach though!!!

  28. eclectic? WTF does that mean anyway? I'm right with you in banning it. I also object to empirical and eponymous (is there something about e words?) and virtually anything Nigella Lawson has to say on the grounds that it's done to show off. the woman has swallowed a thesaurus :(
