Pennsylvania Weekend

Kevin took Tallulah and Jackson to visit his family in Pennsylvania for two weeks. I stayed home to look after Harley, 16, as he has a job, and Cy, 10, as he had baseball. Saturday night it was a carnivore-arama at Kenny'nMikes place to meet all their rellies (who are from Pennsylvania!)

But first, on Friday night I met my friends at iconic Mexican restaurant,  Dona Tomas.

Always love Vanessa's layering

Here's a few snaps Kevin sent from Pennsylvania:

Tallulah and Jackson at Lycoming County Fair

Jackson and Tallulah on the Delaware River
Kevin with kids and his father Bob and stepmother Patty at Penn State, just voted 50 university in the world, top 25 in the US (needs some good news after all that's happened.)
Kevin is taunting me with this photo of Grandma Patty. Rhubarb is my favourite

Tallulah and Jackson are famed for their constant bickering - they do it like it's their job. I asked Kevin how it was going. "I haven't heard them speak to each other so far"he said.  Baby steps.

Then Cy flew out by himself to meet them in New York. He wore me down at the airport at 7am and left for the Big Apple with a big bag of candy. Not my finest hour as mother.

Tallulah, Jackson and Cy at the Yankee Stadium.  Apparently everyone puzzled by their A's gear.  Way to represent Oakland and keep 'em confused
Now some snaps from Kenny'nMike's BBQ.

I wore Nic+Joe blouse I got in France on bike ride -  bit pregnancy but I still like it
Kenny'n'Mikes backyard

Everyone out on the side deck now

Buffalo ribs galore
Not a great photo but you get the idea, forgotten how fantastic scalloped spuds were
Mike and his cousin Ryan. Beards are in! (I'm a fan of clean shaven, what about you?)
Mike and Harley

Awful news about Gaza Strip and the Malaysian Airlines plane that was shot down. The passports of the children flying by themselves; 10-year-old Miguel, who was traveling with his brother asked his mother before he left "What happens when the plane will crash" (the other brother took a later flight.) It's hard to know what to say. As usual FF hit the mark in her post today: "Love Fiercely People."

Beards are 'Hipster Vogue' aren't they?

    1. I know. Its better than going to a restaurant...and they are so generous.
I am not down with the beard thing, maybe I'm too old to get it. It's very The Luminaries for me. Also just saw that great film about Charles Dickens and altho amazing acting his beard was acting even harder

    2. FF, I'm going to use that expression from now on in too. Vogue, baby

  2. That's the best plate of ribs I've seen since you did that show on telly. Wearing A's gear into Yankee Stadium can be a dicey proposition but glad there were no incidents.

    1. Cy would have been up for it - they love to hate the Yankees over this coast!

    2. Ok GSL, how come I'm the last to know your blog is set up? Just spent a very nice interval reading your new blogs post which span a diverse (I am resisting still eclectic and myriad) range of topics which is as it should be! Very impressed!

  3. Can't say I'm a fan of the full frontal. Like a great 'stache though. I won't be vulgar but beards have no business scratching my tender spots...a tickles always good though.

  4. Glad you could make it and hang out with the family. Vegans would not have liked this BBQ (well - there was the Charred Broccoli with Romesco Sauce, Potato Gratin and Sauteed Corn), but they missed out on the Smoked Pork Parts, Grilled Water Buffalo and Chicken with Chimichurri Sauce. And the small amount of wine that was consumed ;-)

  5. Yes, my hand goes up to that one last, felt very very delicate the next day! When when will I ever learn (seemed like a good idea at the time...)

  6. That food looks good… and Kennyn'Mikes backyard is spectacular - love all the retaining walls.
Glad you got some time out from the brood. There is a reason why Boarding School was invented....

  8. Snazzy deck and fantastic looking food. The ribs look evil! :)

Beards are not my thing. Too tickly and I like a clean-shaven look.

  9. Love this! And GSL is right about the food!!!

we used to call our son and daughter The Bickersons when they were young, but that seems to have mainly passed, thank god!

  17. 'Backyard' is one of those words that gets lost in translation... I always think of the backyards in Coronation Street... not the wonderful ones that you show on your blog!

    1. In Corry I think they may have kept their garbage bins out there and I don't remember much else about them? Usually they showed them when something sinister was afoot.

    1. I have not been busy at all, have spent this week watching parenthood and writing. Just looks busy because I stick everything on the blog.
Kevin on the other hand has really checked a lot of boxes in two weeks in PA and NY city. He's now doing shopping therapy in Soho (Tallulah at Topshop, him at icebreakers) before hitting Stone Harbor

  20. I vote for clean shaven! But, sometimes great gifts come in hairy packages. I like the way Tallulah does the Delaware river, totally kicked back. Looks like they're having a great time. I'm gonna have to start stalking you to piggy-back to these parties. Awesome!

  21. Beards do seem to be the in thing but some don't seem proportional to the face. The big ones make me want to turn the man upside down like one of those magnetic games with iron filings... Or is that just me?

  22. Sounds like a lot of fun happening- both with and without you! THose ribs look divine….
I like a bit of scruff (not a true beard!), but Lukus has to be clean shaven for his job, so I only see it on him during vacations.

I don't have words for all the tragedies right now… they are really eating at my soul..

  24. Always like to see what Kenny and Mike do. I just love that blouse from France on you..Cy is amazing going all over by himself. Funny how independent the younger ones get. Just had a friend return from Pennsylvania and said it's gorgeous and so much to do. I hope to visit one day.

The crashes and the planes are so upsetting. I just can't even go there with the poor families and the school kids. What is going to happen with this? It could have been any of us.
    xo
