Scary: Mid-Life Crisis Shoes

I won't be doing much Halloween dressing up-partaying tomorrow. I'll be keeping an eye on a friend during an operation (nothing too serious). There were a few scary incidents this week which warrant a mention though. First up, I tried on these 6"YSL heels - are these the female mid-life crisis equivalent of a man cruising in a yellow Ferrari with the wind in his comb-over?

Trying on the 6" Mid-Life Crisis shoes

*I showed my husband this picture and he said: "You could do yourself some real damage if you fell in those heels." It's not often he pulls the health and safety card so I took note. They were way too pricey anyway.

*On Saturday night I performed with my hip hop dance group Platinum at a Darnell's Halloween show in Hayward. We arrived at 4.30pm and were not dancing until 9.30pm so I bought the last ticket and watched the first half.  Adorable kids, energetic teens and really talented semi-pro dancers  - what the heck was I doing here? A moment of panic. Anyway once we were on and the music started - Corey Action's mix of old Oakland songs - everyone was up and dancing and cheering for us; kids, mamas and all. The great thing about America is people just want to see you having a go and loving it. There is no cynicism here (leaving me sometimes as the bitter-party-of-one.)

Platinum after the Halloween show.  I thought since we were around the cauldron we were being witches but, no it was cats. (And I'm always despairing of my kids not listening) I'm the Crazy Cat Lady in the left back rather than Catwoman
Our t-shirts lit up
*We did Michael Jackson's Thriller in our cardio hip hop class today. Talking of Michael Jackson and operations, David Sedaris in his latest book says the drugs they give to conk you out during a colonscopy (Sedaris has taken loads of drugs in his past and says these are the ultimate)  are the same drugs that doctor gave Michael Jackson took every night to put himself to sleep!!

*It's the coldest it's ever been here. I even took my Lion King cardy off the top shelf. Cy, nine, continues to open all the windows in his bedroom and puts the cold fan on full bore.

What scary stuff in your week?

  1. Those are some serious shoes, although at 6", I can't imagine being to walk in them. I have a pair of platform sandals with 5" heel and they are scary... :)

Looks like you had some fun dancing.

  2. Those are some crazy heels. That's so sweet of you to keep an eye on your friend, hope surgery goes well.

It's cold here too, off and on. One day it will be really warm and next day it's 45 and 30 at night! Not ready for Winter just yet!

Your dance group sounds like fun, love those shirts!!

  3. Lion King, Catwoman, you're a wild one.
The shoes, oh my goodness, I admire anyone who can stand up in them.
But most of all, I admire you dancing as part of Platinum!

  5. You have to get those shoes!!!!! They are incredible (I'm too tall for them though).

I have a similar cardigan, a little more caramelly in color that I got in Barcelona. Did I remember you getting that in Europe somewhere? Reminds me of a past post.

    1. Gina - yes good remembering as Cy would say. I bought it in Berlin from Stefanel (love that store) How tall are you? I always have wished I was two inches taller

  6. You are a very special person Jody....good to your friends, a joiner-in who loves life and living it and someone who just has to get those shoes...they look fantastic!

  7. I'd break stuff in those shoes...I wouldn't even be able to stand still in them, haha!! They are fierce though. The show sounded good, it's great you have fun doing that. Love the cardigan, I really need to get myself some because it is getting colder here and the rain makes it even colder still. Yours looks cozy :)) x

  8. 1. Those shoes are fierce, but I too would break my ankle.
    2. Hip hop dance group?!? Holy smokes, I should be the one buying mid-life crisis shoes. You are much hipper than me!
    3. Love Sedaris and will read anything he writes. Again: my life is boring.
    4. Best sweater ever! And Lion King indeed! I'm wearing shorts again today. Maybe we should consider swapping houses for a month one year!

  9. Just walking in those heels would keep you fit! Do you have the dancing on YouTube?

  10. I was about to raise the health and safety issue about those ladders you were wearing on your feet, but your husband beat me to it. Thoughtful husband you have.

Coolish weather has settled in up here, too. Today it is 3°C (that's about 38F). Are you colder than that in California?

Hope you stay safe this evening. "From ghoulies, and ghosts, and long-leggedy beasties, and things that go bump in the night, . . ." et al.

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

  11. Too hilarious. The visual of the comb over blowing in the breeze, is great!! Those shoe are some scary looking things. You're brave to even think about buying them. I've given up on sexy shoes. They have to be comfortable now. I love your Lion king sweater BTW. Have a great week.

  12. Funny how you comment on my post about my singing in public and here you are shaking your booty on stage! You see, you love a bit of fun too!
Laughing at the health and safety talk from hubby. There needs to be a sensible one in every couple :)

  13. 25 years later and "Thriller" is still a super cool song isn't it?

  14. Look at those heels
    Do they have wheels?
    Cold pfffft right
Come here for a night lol

  15. I love the heels. I have some that high. They are car to bar heels. They are most definitely not made for walking, especially on a cobbled street. I have a feeling my days are numbered for the high high heels, so I am enjoying them before I get to the ankle breaking point.
Love the dance off - it sounds so much fun. I can't believe that with all your background dance experience (tin man, the dance you cannot name etc etc) you felt that you didn't have a place at the show?! It is nice the American's are so ra-ra as an audience. Cynicism is definitely an Anglo/ Commonwealth thing. xx

  16. I wouldn't be able to stand in those heels!
Oh the Lion King cardi is stupendous, just the thing for winter.

  17. That reminds me that I have till May to find some footwear to wear in the evenings on board.. Heels are now a no-no - safety is paramount but I'd love something reasonably dainty. Black patent would be an option?

  18. You are an inspiration!

I couldn't even think about those shoes without my ankles wobbling.

  19. I note that you took a pic of the shoes while you were sitting down... probably wise!
I think it does no harm to act the prat, and reminds one that life is for living, not for being sensible. Anyway, I've noticed that one's capacity to give a shit is in indirect proportion to age, and frankly, I'm swinging it! (not biblically)

  20. One should always be able to run fast in shoes, you never know when you'll need to make a hasty exit... this is my mantra for shoes.
    Sx

  21. I'm sure the YSL shoes are engineered perfectly (for the $$$$$), so that it's near impossible to topple off them. I'd buy them!

  22. From my friend C: Okay... had an endoscopy yesterday and got to try that Prophynol and I'm telling you it was truly a trip! Out cold for 20 minutes or so during procedure and then another nap for 30 min and then all done and just went about my biz (or rather the entire family's biz) for the rest of the day! Funny you would mention that in your blog. Can't imagine how anyone could get hooked on that because you don't function at all!

  23. Good for you and your hip hop group . Well the shoes I'm not sure they are car to bar shoes more like car to accident and emergency but I do think the more wine I drink the better I walk in high shoes so you could try this. Have a fun weekend

  24. Love the shoes but doubt I could even stand up in them, much less walk! Is you dance group on youtube yet for us to view?!

  25. No comb over but the Ferrari would of course be red.

  26. Wow, I cannot believe those shoes. Unbelievable. Too high. Too expensive. Not for me. Midlife crisis or not. But, I think you are right about that.

  27. I'm still laughing about thinking you were witches not cats, so something I would do. And great that you're doing these classes, they sound fun, esp with old Oaktown (as they say) music!

  28. Those shoes were completely fierce, but I would kill myself in them too!! In my dream life where I am really coordinated and sashay across all rooms I enter, I would own 7 pairs!!

  29. I bought a last pair of high heels a few years ago. I wore them to a wedding and after arriving in my seat told my friends to look at them now as I wouldn't be able to wear them beyond where I sat.

    Enjoyed it.
