Allen GInsberg and Ma Clampett

Saturday night we went to our friend Andy's 50th birthday - theme was The Sixties. Wore my vintage floral frock and had my hair done in chignon of a thousand hairpins. Good as gold. Then realised in the car the petticoat was like asbestos and the hairpins were sore, so took off petticoats and some of the hairpins. And that's how I came to look like Ma Clampett in Ellie May's dress by the time it came to doing the Soul Train.

With vintage frock and boomphy do...before the Ma moment

Kenny (Haight dude) and Mike (Allen Ginsberg) in the back of the car. Kenny's boomfy hair bit squashed by roof
Only the host ( Sgt Pepper) and us dressed us! And one person didn't realise we had costumes on. They thought Mike was just French.... and presumably I was pretentious lady.

Tallulah, 12, and Jackson, 14, went skiing with their friends over the weekend. Apparently still not much snow in Tahoe. Just occurred to me that maybe we've spent all this money and time teaching them a sport that won't exist in ten year's time.

Tallulah texted me this photo, no snow in Tahoe

Soccer and baseball started - didn't they just finish?... there is no season for kids' sports anymore. Remember when there was a dash of frost on the front lawn and you knew it was netball time?

Cy. 10, off to his first baseball game

Banana leaves are surviving the drought, even though we've cut back watering right back.

Just mailed Pinstripe Coolots Suit to my sister blister Shazza who lives in Auckland, New Zealand. Hopefully she'll will be able to wear it while she's doing the newsreading. Judging by the cost of postage, Coolots Suit will be boarding the plane, passing Through The Curtain and partaking of First Class champers and assorted nuts whilst being guarded by El Chapo's 300 former bodyguards.  Coolots will be pretty spoiled by the time they disembark, Shazza. Just sayin'.

Yesterday morning I told my editor I was off to interview the couple living in modern treehouse - and asked her did she want to send photographer. She emailed back: "Short on photographers, Dalai Lama in town."

Classic! I was feeling "room without a roof" all day and just knowing the DL was in town made me"Happy!" Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth...

  1. You look very swish!! But themed parties stress me out a bit - you are such a good sport to take part properly. I can't believe with all that snow the US has had that Tahoe doesnt have enough! the Dalai Lama has an amazing presence - hope you get to see him somehow??

    1. One great theme party is just to says "Wigs" - even people who don't like to dress up will wear a wig. The party really got going after everyone tried on Kenny's wig - each person took on a different persona, it was really funny!

  2. Wow baseball starts early down there
Up here it is still rare
Doesn't start for a few more months at least I'd say
Oh I'm sure snow will still be here in 10 years away

  3. I love listening to the Dali Lama giggle his way through interviews!! He is quite outrageous really! :D love a good costume party. Glad you adopted out the suit, I really love the peplum jacket. Lucky sister. If I not wrong, Andy seems to host a great party! Xx

  4. Fun party. I cannot imagine you ever looking Clampett-like.

I cannot believe Tahoe has no snow.
We've had snow since November. Terrible winter for us but good skiing. And yes, there is no season for kids' sports: they all run into each other.

Say hi to the DL if you run into him. Funny to have one's job interrupted because of him.

  5. I love costume parties!! Wish more people would give them People can be such spoiled sports about costumes but I love to pretend I'm someone else. Didn't know the DL was in town.
You do look fab and the hair is perfect!

  6. Because of the kids' school auctions parties we have been to millions and they are always a hoot. Always enjoy the ones where I go a bit more goober

  7. Personally I'd rather see the treehouse people than the DL. Guess I'm getting old cause I've seen DL enough already.

  8. Love the party pics! YOu kow I love a good costume party too!

Oh the DL! or as my son says The Dolly Llama!

I am happy even this far away knowing he's in your town!

  9. I am not a great fan of costume parties myself - mainly because I have so many 'posh' frocks that I rarely get to wear that it's annoying to miss an opportunity. Plus I am too small to rent most costumes.
I love your fancy 'do - Tres chic!

  10. That's hilarious that people thought you were just dressed normally. Guess you almost passed for one of the retro 50's lovers. That dress is gorgeous by the way - love the chintzy print.
As for sport, the football was on the other night, and I asked my Husband if it was a rerun... no, it's the pre-season series. I then asked if the cricket had yet finished. No, it has not. He lit up with glee telling me this was "the best time of the year, a perfect storm, when football and cricket collide". Looks like I'll be doing a lot of reading in the evenings for the next few weeks. Sounds like the suit is on its way to a glam future! xx

    1. Hah - that is so funny - the perfect storm, when the Gods of sport collide...and sit down on the couch together...Shazza is a radio newsreader so we will have to listen in to the glam, rather than watch

  11. HOW in the world did someone not realize you guys were in costume?! I wish I lived somewhere where there were invites to costume parties.

    1. You should move down here, in the past decade we've had at least one a month - though that's because the kids' school need so much fundraising.

  12. You always have me clapping with your wonderful story telling!

I am imagining the coolots suit now --- enjoying a bit of caviar as an inflight movie (of its selecting) plays....

I hope YOU took photos of the treehouse!

  13. Love the dress and hair-do, and someone thought you were all wearing your normal clothes?? And I adore the sparkly handbag, although I love anything sparkly!
I know what you mean about the sports "seasons" there are no seasons anymore. Football (soccer) used to start the weekend after cricket finished, usually around the 1st of September, now they play both all year round, indoors and outdoors - it's no wonder I'm a wreck!

  14. Wonder which is worse, being in fancy dress and no one realising or wearing usual outfit and mistakenly taken to be wearing fancy dress?
Do hope that the trip home from the party, you were not put in a rocking chair on the car roof.

  15. The dress is marvellous, I love that!! Looked perfect on you!! That's funny they didn't think you were dressed up. I guess the over the top looks are what qualify these days instead of the real thing. Ahh well. xx

  16. Baseball starting is always a sure sign of spring indeed! I have been enjoying reading about spring training. I wish for a good year for your Oakland A's and my Cincinnati Reds :)

  17. I love themed parties. You look fab. Also, being turned down for *anything* because the Dalai Lama is in town is pretty cool. I may incorporate that into my general excuses. "I'd love to have coffee on Friday but the Dalai Lama is in town." So much better than saying, "I'm busy." :-)

  18. Bloody hilarious blog Jody - more like this and less of the fashion ones I say - will coolots also arrive with airs and graces that us in Dorkland might not be able to maintain???

    1. Think Coolots will be able to go Manolo a Manolo with the famed Susan of Parnell, sweety.

  19. I was with the DL at UofSC Monday AM…the main themes (that i could understand, mind you) were KINDNESS & COMPASSION, especially in the workplace (though he admitted he's never really been iN the workplace, as he is a spiritual leader; they are excused from all the BS that happens there).
Perhaps THAT'S why he's so GD HAPPY? he has the sweetest smile and chuckle, truly.

  20. We've only been to one costume party after we finished school, I was amazed to see how many "pillars of the community" got into it. One distinguished portly accountant, a bearded professorial type, actually rented a Henry VIII outfit. His wife was Anne B, natch, little red ribbon around her neck. Quite a few people thought his beard was rented along with the costume, and tugged at it.

    1. Hah! I do remember in London the guys were quite into the vicars and tarts themes (they liked to dress up as tarts)

  21. You looked lovely, in my opinion! And you guys alwys seem to have so much fun at those parties....wish I were there.

Anyway, if you want to send Tallulah to Vancouver, we have had plenty of snow here. It snowed for days and we have a foot of snow on the ground, which is unheard of.

  23. I couldn't imagine how you were going to link Ma Clampett and Alan Ginsberg - but it makes perfect sense now. A surprising number of women wear vintage style clothes everyday, which could be why no one thought you were wearing a costume - especially since that dress fits you so well. I can't believe I have only fond memories of all the time I spent driving my kids to sports and all those other organized activities - at the time it much have been kind of annoying. (But worth it.)

    1. Hi Beryl...and don't you hear the most classic things from the back of the car. Older parents told me about that but it's true, the kids somehow think there is a sound proof glass between them and you and they say things they would never say normally

    2. So true - it's like they think you're not event there. Juicy tidbits of gossip that would embarrass the National Enquirer!

  24. Jody, You find the coolest things. That dress is the bomb. Got to keep that in your arsenal for any retro situations. You guys sure know how to have fun..
Loved about the suit going first class.. Hope it appreciated the champers..Lol.
P.s. That bloody RH catalog was a crime! I mean how many trees had to die for each one? Awful I think!!

  25. Had to laugh at your editor's email. Classic.
I clicked onto the link for the suit you sent your sister - how did I miss that post? Anyway, I hope they enjoyed the nuts and champers.

  27. Oh you look so cute! Sounds like it was such a fun party. I love Tahoe and know that the water supply for most of Northern CA. comes from the snow melt so I sure hope that they get a bunch more before the Spring thaw.
