The Crisp White Shirt

I had to have some headshots taken and the photographer said: wear a Crisp White Shirt. I've never owned such a creature -  not sure why, probably because I'm too lazy to iron. Speaking of which, one of my Kiwi "chuck" friends in London used to iron everything, even her white t-shirts, and she was the first of us to hook a husband (for years and years and years) so there you go. Anyway here is my rundown of a few of the less pricey white shirts - because why would you spend loads of money on white?

The best fit and brightest white was Halogen from Nordstrom: rests well on shoulders and slight curve at waist

Most unscrumply was Banana Republic, nice double stitching but shoulders slightly too wide

J Crew, Boy Shirt was thin, strange on shoulders and scrumply. I guess Jenna loves to jooj everything and you need to on this. The non-iron one hopefully is better

The headshots came back ...I slid into deep depression. I am so used to I-phone and Instagram snaps and now I was faced with cold hard wrinkled reality of the old school camera shot. Praise be for photoshopping. Anyhoo...here's some Classic Crisp White Shirt moments:

Sharon Stone famously grabbed her then-husband's Gap Shirt to wear with her Vera Wang skirt
A pensive Grace Kelly in the South of France

Blake Lively

Audrey...of course

Just kidding about the last photo. Oh, I may be old and wrinkly but I can still have fun with it.

How do you wear your white shirt?

Home Fires Burning

Halfway through Thanksgiving I realised that I'd taken loads of photos but there was no memory card in my camera. A veritable metaphor for my life, friends. We really missed Kevin's father Bob and stepmother Patty, who were stalled by bad weather in Pennsylvania.  Bob bursts into song whenever something jogs his memory, and in his honor I kept on singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" whenever I passed our fireplace.

You won't get that song out of your mind now
Kevin basting the old bird. Tallulah said: "You are such a trophy wife, Dad"

Aunt Mary at the head of table, with Dave, Janelle and family and kids
As with last year,  Mr Carson would have had my guts for garters over table setting and lazyarse absence of white tablecloth.
Photo of cousins from last year, Janelle,  Grady and Leila

I assured Kevin, Turkey Chef, that Tarquin, the Ashtanga practising bird, was not tough after two days of brining. Kevin was sad and thought it was.

Told you that our sides (outsourced) would be plain, not Rococo, but there was the mushroom bake and collards greens with parmesan which proved me wrong, but very tasty. My food photos looked disgusting so have not posted them.

Just as I heard Kevin's cousine, Janelle, arrive en famille, I decided Old Teal frock was 'Meh.' Great expression here which means, as the NY Sunday Times Meh List says: "Not hot. Not not. Just Meh."(This week's Meh List  included pumpkin ale and the Maroon5 guy).  Had just been watching Barbara Stanwyck's Christmas in Connecticut in all her 1946 palazzo pants glory and so reached for my blue Alice and Olivia high-waisters and rolled-up white shirt. Barb fulfills every inch of my favourite expression: "What a Dame!"

Alice and Olivia pants, Halogen white shirt, vintage necklace

Kevin's Aunt Mary came from Kansas, she's the family historian, and she told us about great grandmother who was Cherokee, a fact sadly kept under wraps for many years and now we can't find out much about her. Apparently Tallulah looks just like that side. Kevin's brother came from Denver. Cousin Janelle came across the bridge with hubs and kids, they're a family of fabulous redheads, you can read my Ode To Redheads if you want.

Next day we took a gondola ride around Lake Merritt which was lovely; singing and history of Venice from an Italian who is from there. Then lunch at the Lake Chalet with oysters and fries.

Tallulah and her friend on the gondola ride around Lake Merrit, Oakland

Then off to Peter the Starcatcher the prequel to Peter Pan, which was overly-long and a bit muddled in style. With some live theatre you just think: "This looks much more fun to be in than to watch."

What about you: any tales of Hot, Not or Meh?

Shoes on the streets of Santa Barbara

There is no doubt that Santa Barbara is the supermodel of seaside towns. Something to do with the glossy green hills, orange-tile, rusted bells and white curves of the Spanish architecture. And beaches as big as football fields, clusters of yachts and tug boats and long piers of candy shops. But what sort of style will we see on the streets?

I did a bit of a cheat and headed straight for thrummingest of all the clothing stores on State Street, Wendy Foster Pierre LaFond.  The women below, who work in the store, are both wearing scarves and diaphanous long layers -  "We're off to lunch with our scarves!" they laughed - but one has simple white flip-flops and another little grey Edwardian-like booties.

Not to be too pathetically breathless about this place, but the entire store has a beachy spa atmosphere of driftwood chandeliers, banana leaf plants and oil paintings of elephants. It has the usual boho chic suspects: Joie, Linea Pelle belts, Chan Luu scarves. But the styling of complete outfits makes us feel we too can have a piece of the JenniferAniston-KateHudson just off the beach, bath, bed and beyond perfection.(does it ever stop with those two?). The other assistant below wears biker boots with white and somehow makes it look summery.

High-waisted shorts are totally easy to pull off...if you have 19 inch waist and ripple free thighs. To be honest that is just the start of the requisites. Needless to say, if you ever see me in them, gently straight jacket me: I have lost the plot entirely. But this young woman in Blue Bee (the second best clothing store in SB) makes them look elegant. Her boots are from Milan, her shorts and top from London, so how does she look so Californian?

This art student below balanced her high-waisted shorts with boyish boots and a fresh buttoned-down fifties shirt and glasses. So I guess we can learn from these two entirely successful short shorters: little denim nmbers have to balanced with a more demure or fuller shirt.

Vans (below) with cut-off shorts and a white tank are as classic and easy as California living used to be ...before everyone got into real estate..or didn't, but talks about it endlessly anyway.

This was the most effortless look of the day (below) and she was wearing moccasins which usually look too Lost Boy in a Daniel Boone episode. Ripped jeans and a shirred top are often a total disaster piled on a total disaster with the strapless top causing endless tugging and adjusting and crises barely averted. But she makes the combo look fresh and wearable. (It's not, it just her).

I  found this mother daughter couple holding hands and giving each other pecks on the cheek. Their devotion was genuinely touching, the daughter was visiting from Texas and  both wore classic English countrywoman with an urban twist. Mother had yellow leather flats and daughter wore black high Mary Janes. They asked about our vacation and I told them it was great because the kids were being taken care of. Daughter and mother agreed a little gentle apartness was a good thing and daughter said she takes a morning stroll to the beach, daily. One of my American friends advises to always limit visits to parents to four days."The fifth day" my friend says "they start treating you like a child and the sixth day you start acting like one."

On the wharf, another mother daughter team with a more casual very pink style with flip flops.

This red skirted girl mixed it up with a large African necklace and delicate black Audrey Hepburn flats.

Mixing it up in a different way were this couple. I told them they looked just as ready for a jungle trek as for shopping on State St. They laughed uproariously and happily posed for photos and tucked my card away in one of their many, many compartments.

Down at the beach many were, of course, shoeless. This guy has built an elaborate new sandcastle nearly every day for 25 years. He lives in a nearby boat and says most nights his sandcastle is bashed down and he starts again the next day from scratch.

Just a few steps across the sand are these two roller girls from Italy.

At the end of the day I find this bundle of bridesmaids-to-be, waiting for the rehearsal dinner. All school friends, their shoes run the gamut of flat sandals to patent pumps. What have we learned from today? I'm still not certain I can define Santa Barbara style but I am certain that I will continue to leave ripped jeans, high waisted shorts and strapless tops to those who can inexplicably wear them with dignity.

Topshop

Good on the Brits! (actually I'm a passport-carrying one too, so slap on the back for me) In an icecream to eskimos move, Topshop is selling their clobber in New York and LA. The store seemed pretty successful in London when we left 12 years ago but I always felt a little overwhelmed by the Oxford Circus one. Kevin just got me this t-shirt from Topshop NY - $70!!! What's happened to the blimin' prices? I remember it as being superduper cheap.

But is it worth $70?...it's secrets will come out in the wash

In more To'sho news, here's my sister blister Pietra teaching film students in India, wearing her TopShop top. Love how her students have given her a cake that reads "Thankyou Dear Pietra."

Here's another one of Pietra wearing To'sho at Ohope Beach, NZ

Here's my sister Sharon wearing her sssparkly pink vinyl ssskirt in Auckland. Hi Shazza! Lookin' good in the neighborhood!

Shazza in her vinyl TopShop skirt (just realised that's Dad on the left)

I usually veer well away from nicking something from a 13-year-old, but this plaid shirt Tallulah bought in NY will not be mutton dressed as lamb on me, promise.

Tallulah, 13, wearing the Topshop plaid shirt

I asked a few bloggy friends over the pond to send me snaps of their Topshop clobber too.

Natalie is a personal stylist from Buckinghamshire, UK. "I bought this dress on a whim as was topping up an online order for free delivery! I think I paid around £45 for the dress full price which wasn't bad at all. It's so easy to wear for the day with flats but also dressed up with heels and is so comfortable. "

Natalie of GlamRosie

Trea is mum of two, lives in Northern Ireland, currently on maternity leave, works as a Civil Engineer and has an online boutique selling statement jewelry. "I bought the skirt last summer and have had quite good wear out of it. It works as a more casual skirt with flats, but also looks great with a glam black top and heels for a night out. The quality is great, it's very stretchy buy also has that 'sucky in' feeling that you get from spanx and who doesn't love that!"

Trea of  Treasures'n'Pleasures

Hollie lives in Stopsley, Luton. She used to work as a hairdresser at Toni and Guy but left to work at the airport, met hubby, had kids and then left there. Now a Brand Ambassador for a pushchair company called phil&teds and Mountain Buggy."White jeans (especially these waist-holding Joni) are a new fave of mine, I love a monochrome look. My Topshop biker jacket is a few years old now but perhaps has had the most use out of anything in my wardrobe- dressed with the white jeans it can make any tee look cool."

Hollie of  MummyWifeandChaos

"A printed jumpsuit like my banana print one can be such an effortless and easy look without having to try hard, perfect for the beach! Mine sold out some time ago but I love this latest offering!"

Hollie of Mummy, Wife and Chaos

"A bright top like my Topshop stripe one to make my outfit stand out with cut-off denim and not look so plain jane. Plus at £7 in the sale it's a steal."

Hollie again

Jane, who lives in Worcestershire: "I'm absolutely in love with camis; have a couple of Topshop ones as they're a great length, not too long but long enough to tuck in if you want. Plus they don't crease too, which is always a bonus especially from an ironing point of view!! This one is in one of my favourite colours; I absolutely adore this shade of red."Similar here in blue

Jane of MidLifeFashion

Avril who lives in Northern Ireland, picked up her Topshop kimono from Depop - a new online ebay style app you can get on your phone."I bought it from a girl whose other items included denim hot pants, white patent leather Doc Martins and a neon yellow jersey tube mini skirt. So I'm guessing I'm not going to be a regular customer of hers :)

"Love the print, the shape and how light it is...as we're actually having a summer of sorts here. But the best bit? It's a size 8 (US 4)...so I can delude myself with every wear!

"Always love striking Topshop gold - it's a shop I adore looking round but it gets top marks in the 'Risk of Mutton' stakes so you have to be so careful what you buy. The jewelry is really cute though so when in doubt, I buy a necklace..."

Avril of SchoolGateStyle

Helen, below, says: "If you asked me 3 years ago if I ever entered Topshop to purchase anything at all I would have scoffed. I was such a clothes snob before I started following blogs. I truly believe, now, that my clothing choices made me look much older ( I am 45. ) I always pop into Topshop now, and love their tops in particular along with their 'Baxter' jeans. Here I am sporting some of my summer purchases. I know they are pretty conservative but that is just me :0) Everything seems to wash and wear well but I am aware that I have to be slightly selective, with what I buy, as arse-skimming shorts don't really suit and I shriek and run at the sight of a neon crop top!

FVC: Happy Ever After

Hang loose Mother Goose..."Fables and Fairytales" was the theme this year at the Family Vacation Centre near Santa Barbara. And there was a happily every after for us...in the family photo session. Minutes before, the kids were digging through their dirty washing - as usual! Amid cussing and swearing from me - as usual! -  didn't I tell them to pack a pair of jeans and white shirt? But somehow Peter, the magical photographer made us look Loving Family-ish. Dreams Do Come True dot dot dot.

Photoshoot including CD: $75. Being Family-ish: Priceless.  Photo: Peter Vandenbelt

Me and Harley, nearly 15. Photo: Peter Vandenbelt

The family camp is at the University of California, Santa Barbara; you stay in student dorms and eat at the cafeteria and the student counsellors take care of the kids while adults go golfing, cycling, shopping, surfing, wine tasting or just act like students again.

Harley and I viewing student digs round the corner...old bikes and last night's beer: " Stay in school son and one day all this this could be yours."

Food: The student cafeteria is a veritable cornucopia of the fresh and the good. But we watched Tallulah, 11, and Cy, 8, head straight for the burger and fries - by-passing the salad bar, Asian stir fry section, roast pork with three veg and organic fruit. Did I see Cy add ice-cream to his Coke for breakfast? Did Tallulah really dip her pizza in Ranch dressing? A vision surely...

Tots to Teens: This is one of the few "all-inclusive"vacations in the US where the kids' programme takes one-month-old infants to 18 year-olds. Catering for teens is tricky and the new director Sheri Fruhwirth, formerly of Disney Cruises, wants to do everything she can to keep the teens coming back. Rope courses, rock climbing, surfing and sleeping under the stars seemed to do the trick for our 15 year-old boys but it was the counsellors who made it all so fun. For the first time our boys entered the family swim race and made wooden race cars for the "Pinewood Derby"

Harley and his friend Nate Photo: Peter Vandenbelt

The final morning Cy threw up, wept, and fell fast to sleep on the bathroom floor. Harley, nearly 15, mused how cool would it be to have a scripture tattoo on his rib cage. Too much enjoyment of life in the land far, far away. Time to return home to reality.

High Fives:
What to see outside the FVC...
1. Brophy Bros: Best fish and chips (or "fush and chups" as we Kiwis would say) and beer-boiled shrimps on the coast. At least a half-hour wait, but worth it for a view of the yachts and local Old Salts mixing with star-lettoes from West Hollywood.
2. Lotusland: I'm fascinated by crazy rich broads and Ganna Walska, a second-rate Polish opera singer who married five times was a doozer. She spent 43 years creating this 37-acre wonderland of cacti, succulents and natives surrounding an enormous conch-adorned pool where she swam naked (of course!) at midnight.
3. Kitson: Bizarre mix of goodies including Chloe cardigans, compilation music CD by Perez Hilton, cute baby T's and "Naughty Girl" dot-to-dot books.
4. Santa Barbara Museum of Art: cutting-edge modern art will shake the sand from your hair.
5. Santa Barbara County Courthouse: white and orange-tiled intrigue that makes you want to live your whole life surrounded by Spanish Colonial.
